The Dodgers and Indians remain the most interested parties, but the Red Sox, Mets and others continue to keep in touch.
Los Angeles still seems the likeliest possibility. The Dodgers rebuffed interest in second baseman Tony Abreu, believed to be the Royals’ top preference, because they view him as a long-term replacement for Jeff Kent.
A possible alternative is shortstop Chin-Lung Hu, who is batting .349 with nine homers and 46 RBIs in 92 games this season at Class AAA Las Vegas and Class AA Jacksonville. Hu, 23, has always played shortstop, but scouts believe he could shift to second base.
The Dodgers are similarly reluctant to surrender Hu, but they have veteran shortstop Rafael Furcal under contract through next season.
The Indians are resisting the Royals’ interest in outfielder Franklin Gutierrez, who is batting .312 in part-time duty. Gutierrez, 24, has also spent time this season at Class AAA Buffalo. Another possibility is outfielder Ben Francisco, who has split time with Cleveland and Buffalo. Francisco, 25, is batting .282 in 39 big-league at-bats.
The Red Sox appear to have some interest in outfielder Reggie Sanders as well as Dotel. The Royals are actively shopping Sanders. Boston wants to dump Wily Mo Peña, who is batting just .202 in 59 games.
