if you could bring a franchise/business to mhk what would it be and why? i have an opinion but will hold off for a while.

Realistically? Spangles. In a dream world? Dave and Busters.

early in the thread peptalk... where in town would you put your business and why do you think there should be one?
i wanted a taco bell on the east side of town and a starbucks seven years ago. they are both there now. my choices now are chikfila outside of the union or whataburger. both near campus or on seth childs. that freaking taco hut/ booyah pizza place woulda been perfecto. but neither are possible due to franchise type rule things (i think).
one thing is for sure. no more sub shops in aggieville. jfc. check back in five years and i guarantee one of them is gonzo.
-
Spangles- Probably over by Mcallisters.
Dave and Busters- Somewhere on Seth Child. Has to be by the theater.

ewx4 (as much as i hate to say it) may have the best option in spangles. basically cause it seems the most realistic. i don't think mhk is close enough to the cow place in okahoma to get a braums. plus a lot of wichita people go to ksu. wichita people love spangles. not totally sure how the steven fam does the spangles thing though. do they really franchise it out?
-
I was gonna put my Dunkin Donuts near the Union but I can't think of anywhere off hand that would be perfect. Somewhere midtown Anderson/Bluemont as you would need easy access by auto and prolly a drive through. Medium to small parking lot would probably suffice.
-
Krispy Kreme
Bruegger's Bagels
Moe's (way better than Chipotle)
Near KSU campus. I'd invest in any of those.
I typed this before I knew it was supposed to be realistic. I'm not sure you could get in on any major fanchise action because the rights are already owned or something, correct?
-
Einstein's would also dominate imo

it doesn't have to be realistic. kinda fun just to talk about. then fun to figure out which ones are realistic and which ones aren't.
i do think that you can get in on some major franchises and not on others. it just depends. they are all different.
take subway for example....they screw their frachisees (not sure if that's a word) over. let's say that you own the subway in aggieville and another person approaches subway about opening up a subway on claflin. subway will prob say "sure, no prob". you are then left with your subway in aggieville knowing that a good portion of your customers are just going to go to claflin or wherever. some franchises will "protect" you though and not allow this. they are all just very different.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries would work, cheap hamburgers and fries that taste awesome. Low overhead, easy to prepare. Who other than Ghandi doesn't like great + cheap hamburgers?

Don't understand the Dunkin Donuts. People used to bring Krispy Kremes back from KC by the dozen. No one does that with Dunkin Donuts.

For the life of me I cannot figure out how 5 guys makes money. Delicious food no doubt. But how do you charge McDonalds prices with less turnout and a better product that almost certainly costs more to make :dunno: I mean, I get that they only have burgs/dogs/fries but...still.

It's too bad they aren't a franchice and are only on the east coast.

no clue whatsoever here but dunkin donuts seems to be making a resurgance, has really hit the coffee market, prob has extremely low overhead.

You can get in serious trouble at my office if you bring krispy kreme's on your friday to bring donuts

was wondering how they make money today while i was eating there. one of the things about mcdonalds is that they have a lot higher operating expense than FGBF given that they have about a million more locations. i can tell you that my double bacon cheeseburger w/ jalapeno and grilled onions wouldn't cost me $5.50 to make and they're paying a ton less than I would.

Noodles & Company could do well in the Aggieville area.
Waterway gas and carwash out by westloop/new fancy side of town.
Pei Wei Chinese in Aggieville area (Made by the P.F. Chang's folks, but cheaper).
Saw some suggestions for Dunkin' Donuts. A franchisee in KC is opening almost 20 of them in KC area in the coming weeks/months.
-
Things I wouldn't mind having:
Culvers
Perkins
Steak n' Shake
IMO's pizza (never happen, but a guy can dream)
Things I'm glad we don't have:
Golden Corral
Denny's
Boston Market
Old Country Buffet

i've thought about the pew wei a lot. f@ck. i dunno. i mean yeah, but mhk is still kinda small. i think it would do great in a good location like chipotle or starbucks but you really need a good location imo. i guess you could say that for all these things though.
carwashes and storage places never go out of business so i guess they'd be great too.

Maybe some outlet mall thingy (picturing the one in Silverthorne, CO)

you know, there used to be one of these or at the very least something exactly the same right by goodcents. it tanked. that was ten years ago though. would probably do a lot better now.

You know what else this town had 10 years ago that tanked.....go karts f^cking go karts couldn't make it, no way that would happen again.

Gordmans.

The key to the juicestop/jamba juice success is to not give the person ordering the drink the opportunity to come inside. Just have a little toll booth type thing out in the middle of an existing parking lot. Two high school kids working at a time. One taking orders and making change and the other mixing the everloving f^ck out of some fruit juice.

so here is my new freshly minted idea-
place in aggieville. fairly small. call it the carnival or something. sell fried twinkies, snickers, etc. everything that you could possibly fry...sell it. also sell big turkey legs and funnel cakes and shaved ice cones and whatever. again...very small. open from 11:00am until 3:00am. not sure about selling beer and stuff. maybe beer but only really bad beer that most people would not want and only sell it from a can. no bottles. no taps.

In-N-Out is a franchise, and it's only on the west coast. And it is also the BEST burger establishment known to mankind.

Yep, was there when I was in school. Not good for a college town. You could go to Scoreboard on wed and get a burger, fries, and 3 beers for the price of a smoothie.

hays has something similar to this. cant think of the name. was basically a concession stand that sold hot dogs, burgers, bisquits and gravy, and cheap pizza. always be a huge line.

Actually, I don't think it was that lot. I think the funny bone building was torn down. The Chinese Chef building is clearly older now that I think about it.

That was during the time when all Hardee's were struggling. Shortly after that, they changed up their menu and became one of the first to add Angus burgers. For a time, they were rated nationally as the best fast food burger.

"In-N-Out is a franchise, and it's only on the west coast"
In-N-Out is privately owned. If it was a franchise it would have been in Manhattan and midwest college towns a long time ago. I would have brought one to Manhattan! Hey, you were right about the coast though. Well, if you consider Nevada, Utah and Arizona *coast*.

Chick-Fil-A out on Seth Child near Famous Dave's would kill IMO. It would be a draw for Manhattan, but also for the soldiers at Ft Riley. That place kills it down south.
Also agree with the Noodle Company (nothing else really like it in town) suggestion and Dick's Sporting Goods....or at least some sort of decent sporting goods store. Manhattan suffers in this area.
-
Dick's Sporting Goods
I think this is a good idea but I don't think Dicks is a franchise. Manhattan does suck ass at having a sporting goods store.

chikfila is out. i just read over their franchise stuff and it's pretty ridiculous. you have to apply to be a franchisee and then chickfila assigns you a location based on their corporate strategy, etc. only 75 out of 10,000 applicants get picked a year.
i do think that mhk is big enough for two chipotles and that one out by target would rake in money. chipotle does not franchise.

Hooters would succeed depending on location. Put on a bunch of UFC fights there and it would kill except I would never in a million years want to go there. Don't really know why someone would want the franchise because the food sucks and you could just have your waitstaff dress skimpy. Prob has to do with having their legal team fight sexual harassment suits :ohno:.

Hardees (its 100Xs better now than it was 10 years ago)
Braums
Long John Silver (for us catholic folk)
A strip club (would make a killing no matter the classiness, I assume there is some sort of ordinance against it??)
strip clubs don't work well in college towns. strippers don't dance where the live, they drive elsewhere so that they don't run into customers at the Dairy Queen.

Except for that chick jeffy knows (in the pic with seriously stoned Olu Hall) who strips/stripped in Salina where she went to high school. Was spotted onstage by her former cheer coach.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there is a law that says you can have neither exposed nor erect nipples out in Manhattan.

Yeah and the customers have to be min. 10 feet from the stage. It is all on the city website.

Best idea on this thread. imo

no doubt. the world just can't have enough crappy, overpriced, fast food restaurants. n&c would fit MHK like a glove worn by gary payton.

Great post.
All of those 3 establishments were frequently mentioned as desirable for late night meals during my time in MHK.
LJS was there for a bit then closed down. :frown:

i think any time you can add a non-chain place that serves food to aggieville, it's a good thing.
