Besides NF being very small and not very deep, it was really about not being passive and attacking more than we did agaisnt UMKC.  The tone was set from the start with an offensive tip and the Samuels foul and make just 4 seconds into the game.  Then we continued to attack the defense, and most importantly got the ball inside the defense.  Most of our open threes early were from inside-out looks.  We did a great job pushing the ball and then getting into secondary break offense (swing the ball to a post at the top of the key, setting up high-low isolations) and then into our offense.  It was only when we got into too much dribbling by the guards that we had our silly turnovers.

Then, a lot of the the scoring came down to Jamar/Wally playing with more confidence.  They combined to go 17-24 from the field and 12-16 from the FT line instead of 7-26 and 3-9 agaisnt UMKC.  2PT shots overall we were 25-44 instead of 18-53.  FTs were 20-26 instead of 11-27. 

Otherwise, our offensive numbers weren't a ton better, but again, a lot of our success tonight was simply attitude, attacking the basket more and getting inside the defense to create much better shots.  Then when we got shots, we made them.

disappointing to see spradling so passive.  maybe i'm remembering him wrong from the first 5 games or so, but he struck me then as much more aggressive.  also sad that the guards mostly can't pass.

I guess I saw things different.  I thought he was pretty agressive and if anything his over-agressiveness (on both offense and defense) got him in trouble.  Could just be perspective I guess.  He did a good job pushing the ball, both off the dribble and getting it up the floor with the pass.

he did pass up court a few times (which i certainly like).  it seems to me that he's scared to get within 15 feet of the basket.  he'll make a move, have a step then pull back, either looking to shoot, pass or pound the ball further through the floor.  pretty easy to defend if the defender knows you aren't looking to finish anything you start.


also hate that crap where he dances around trying to get an angle for an entry pass.  jfc, if you can't get it to the big, reverse and let someone else do it.

Didn't. Did say that on the fifth day, they exclusively practiced defending the back door cut.

I doubt Will believes he can finish around the basket with almost any defender in his face. I don't blame him either.

Yeah but his little floater attempt to end the half was nice. Not the shot, but the fact that he went for it. Could've dished out for a three to end the period. Going to be a very nice core of our team in two years.

a little infuriating to see that unf #3 was only shooting 32% from 3 going into today.  though he shot 40% two years ago (as a freshman at tenn st), and hits fts at a very high rate.

Great post.  The bold is what I thought would be the signature of this years team.  We don't have great speed, but you don't need to great speed for a good secondary break.  I also thought we would be a very inside out oriented team this year, and we have the players for that kind of ball.  Rod, Jake, Sprads, Russell can all shoot an open three and Kelly, Samuels and I had hoped Wally are talented enough to make that game work. 

The last bolded part is IMO our biggest achille's heel.  It makes me pull my hair out sometimes, hopefully we solve the problem.

he's been fine at finishing whenever he's tried (at the basket, floaters, pullups, whatever).  he has good size, good vision, good handles.  there's no reason for him not to penetrate.
