Building a PC
« on: December 24, 2010, 02:17:52 AM »
Taking my next big step in the world of video, graphics, and 3d editing.  Building a PC from scratch and am looking for opinions on the crown jewel of custom computers: the motherboard. I built my own several years ago as an amateur and wasn't aware at the time that I was severely limiting my future upgrade capabilities with the board I chose.  This time around there are a few key features I am looking for: room for lots of RAM, USB 3.0 compatibility, and CPU upgrade potential.  Am leaning toward the following board:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131631

It's built for AMD processors, and I know Intel's i7 line is where it's at right now (I own a Vaio laptop with an i7-720QM and have had no complaints with speed), but I've been told by many others in the graphic design field that AMD's Phenom II line is just as solid and easier on the wallet.  If I go with that board I'm also leaning toward the following processor:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103849

Thoughts and advice from others who've gone this road in the past?

I know nothing about building a computer but my friend built mine and I do know it flashes ASUS everytime it boots up. So with no expertise I will recommend ASUS.

Cause you can save hundreds of dollars and still get something that would be considered "top of the line"

You won't be disappointed with a Phenom II. It isn't "just as solid" as the i7, but it runs about 1/2 the price, and it's still pretty nice.

Why in the world would you build a computer  :horrorsurprise:

Cuz then you don't have to deal with all the proprietary crap that all the mainstream manufacturers use.  I can continually upgrade one part at a time and make every part fit what I need it to do.

And it's cheaper.  And you don't get all that extra crap software that needs to be formatted off of the computer anyway.

This.  Some people don't have big envelope of cash for computers, SD! Some of us have to upgrade as we go using smaller envelopes.

Built my first PC my senior year in HS.  686 processor.  Worked well back then.  I recommend that.

Incred easy to do.  Used it all through college.  Upgraded as needed.  Motherboard here, HD there.

Def the way to go unless you are a Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).

Would not recommend that retards do this.

I like the idea of saving money. I like the idea of having a badass comp. I don't like the idea of learning how to do it and fixing my glasses with athletic tape.
I once blew clove smoke in a guy's face that cut in front of me in the line to KJ's.

Not as big of a money saver as it used to be, but still plenty cheaper to build your own, more customizable, etc. Also depends on if you want it completely legal or not.

Don't listen to stupid brainwashed Apple minions. Go cats.

That's just wrong. I'd be willing to wager that Hemmy's computer costs more than just about any pre-made computer you could find.

nope- i was right.  hemmy could have spent a lot more had he purchased his computer prefab, but instead he used his connections at newegg.com to score 2nd day shipping for free and a free tube of arctic silver thermal paste then constructed that bitch.

You can save lots of money if you are building a high end PC but not so much building an entry level rig.
