Inbounds plays - would love to see a stat
« on: December 20, 2010, 02:15:26 PM »
I'm sure this stat would be impossible to find, but I would love to see a comparison of the % of times we've scored off an inbounds play vs the rest of college basketball.  We are probably in the 1% range in the amount of times we score.  That might be too high.  What would the rest of college basketball be?  8%?  10%?  Really good teams probably get to 15-20%?

I don't know what the percentages are for most teams, but I know ours sucks.  This I do know.

Lots of coaches have a "just get the ball in" attitude when it comes to inbounds.  Its just easy to notice when coaches spend a lot of time and try to score on them.  The only problem is if you turn the ball over getting the ball in, and I don't think we do anymore than most.

Disagree FAN....while I agree that it's important to not turn it over, I think you are losing some very good opportunities to score when all you do is lob it in over your four across line up EVERY time.

That's the real strategy. Never do anything on inbounds, and then occasionally bust out our scoring inbounds plays to catch people guard. So that no one can defend because there will be not tape.

Duh!

I don't necessary disagree with you, but I also don't think its a big deal. To me its similar to FT % discussions.

If there's any importance to it at all, the stat you would want to examine would be the number of times you scored at all on the ensuing possession, not just off a lob or spot-up shot, which is what I'm assuming Cred means.

it would have to be a very small impact.

for a kstateish team, figure 1.1 pts per possession.  figure the difference in scoring off inbounds plays to be 15% (from ptc's guess).

.85 x 1.1 + .15 x 2 = 1.03 + 0.30 = 1.33

vs

1.0 x 1.1 = 1.10

i have no idea how many offensive-side inbounds opportunities there typical are in a game.  5?, 10?.  if so, we're talking a diff. of 1 or 2 points over the course of a normal game.

if trying to score off inbounds plays results in an increased risk of turnovers (no idea if it does), then that advantage could also evaporate pretty quickly.

Babysteps . . . we need actual inbound "plays" that allow us to actually get the ball inbounds in time.

K-State basketball scoring on an inbound play . . .    Good one . . .

2010-11 example of when kstate turned the ball over, or called a time out, trying to inbound the ball?  i can't recall it happening.

You know what inbound play I loved?  The one where we quickly inbounded the ball of an opp’s  made basket, got it denis who streaked down the court and hit a floater.  That was awesome.

We barely make it many times . . . I believe we needed a timeout against Florida in a simple made basket situation.   Several other times we barely got the ball in as I recall.   But the point remains, it's very obvious Frank really doesn't care about trying to score off an inbound play, so why even bother to bring it up or ask the question??

I'll be nicer next time so the Frankites don't get all upset.

just trying to help you out.  it's hard to take you serious when you go nuclear over every Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) little thing like the subject at hand.  if you stick to valid talking points like how shitty the recruiting has been then progress has been made.  tia

we run nice little sets for jake, rodney, sprads and irving on occassions.  for jake it's usually the one where the big gets it at the elbow, jake cuts to the opp elbow and then backcuts to the basket.  it works once every 15 games or so.  IIRC, it worked against MU in the octagon of overratedness.  we've ran screens for rod, irving and sprads off inbounds in the corner before as well.  i thought we ran an alley oop of an inbound set to jamar, but that could have been just a normal set.

frank doesn't put an emphasis on it.  bfd.

Who is going "nuclear" . . .  :ck:

Yeah, I think we've gone over the top and then run a backdoor with JSam once off the baseline.

meh.  just thought telling someone to 'eat a bag of dicks' is a signal that you'd lost your perspective.  could be wrong?  :dunno:

of course.  like sys demonstrated the payoff would be minimal.  why waste restricted practice time on it?

A better question, what % of inbounds plays do we set a screen?

My guess < 5%.

Hard to score off inbounds without setting screens.

ft% is/would be a much bigger deal than scoring off inbounds plays...
