OB'll fix er!
« on: December 15, 2010, 06:36:25 PM »
Can't believe LHCBS didn't think of more pushups earlier.

Quote
Drilling Defense

Not even a full week into the new policy, Tre Walker has already had had an up-close encounter with the LHC Bill Snyder Family Stadium turf. The recently named Freshman All-American has felt his nose touch the cold turf on several occasions. "I've already done probably 20- some up-downs," the linebacker said on Wednesday, and there are certainly more to come. It may or may not have any effect, but don't accuse LHC Bill Snyder of not making every possible effort to sure up his 118th-ranked rush defense before it takes the field for one, final time this season in a New Era Pinstripe Bowl Appearance against Syracuse.

A militant style of penance is alive and kicking on the practice field in Manhattan, Kan., this postseason. The more tackles a defensive player misses in a drill and scrimmages, the more pushups he does, and the tally being kept isn't some kind of loose estimate. Watchful eyes are prying.

LHC Bill Snyder and his coaches have begun preparations for the Pinstripe Bowl later this month.
"We've only been doing it for not even a week," Walker said, "The most I've seen somebody have to do was 35 so far."

Each misstep is worth five, a total that could increase as bowl-season practices wear on. Fistfuls of in-pad pushups aren't simple, but, then again, the Wildcats defense has made tackling look much harder than in recent weeks. It's unlikely that the pushup punishment alone will make a stunning difference for a unit that has appeared to be a step slow all season, but according to the players doing them, its the accountability the rule breeds that matters.

"They say you practice how you play, and we want to be focused," safety Tysyn Hartman said. "We're trying to develop better practice habits. Those things can add up out there, too."

A few sore arms and a renewed sense of responsibility alone aren't going to completely shut down a rush-heavy Syracuse offense or its tailback, senior Delone Carter, who has rushed for 1,060 yards this season. The Orange's offense isn't exactly a juggernaut, but K-State has shown a knack for making even average attacks look like the Spanish Armada in a shootout with a rubber ducky.

"I think we've gotten their attention to a certain degree, Snyder said, before going on to discuss his Dec. 30th opponent's offensive tendencies. "They are a very physical offensive line with a two-back offense.

"The running back is a thousand-plus-yard rusher. He's nifty and he picks his holes well. They run the same kinds of things as we do."

The tweaks to the defensive approach at practice go beyond a few calisthenics. It's just that reporters have a better chance at walking from here to New York on their hands than getting Snyder to discuss them.

"I'm not telling you," he said quickly putting to bed questions about his defensive approach on Wednesday.

The rapid-fire response was unmistakably Snyder-esque. A coach that has earned reputation for being paranoid and secretive when it comes to … well, everything, he's treating the Bowl season no differently. So much for the holiday spirit, as giving the gift of information is not something the leader of the Wildcat football program seems willing to do.

His players are a bit more loose-lipped when it comes to the defensive changes, but not much. Then again, even saying they exist is sharing more information than Snyder is comfortable with leaking.

"I can't really get into all the different things we've been doing, but we've been doing some different things," Walker, who wouldn't say which player holds the early record for pushup following a practice, said. "Syracuse has TV. Syracuse watches TV. We watch TV too, so I just can't talk about it."

Whatever is being done to help plug the leak that has helped 123 points trickle through during K-State's last three games has roughly two weeks to stick before one last test, the site of which will be Yankee Stadium.

"We understand how serious this is," Walker said. "I think it's finally been driven home."

They were going to make the number go with missed tackles in the UNT game but then realized that everyone would be dead.

I wonder if Cosh is on the "watchful eyes" or "pushups tallying" duty.

Whatever the case, this time they're really getting serious.  Like REAL serious.

Pushups = bigger, stronger arms = more successful arm tackling.

Christ on a rough ridin' crutch!! Let's see...you're the 118th ranked rush defense and you turned the likes of North rough ridin' Texas' running back into a Heisman candidate.  But high schoolesque up-downs 2 weeks before a shitty rough ridin' bowl game are what finally drove it home!?!??!!   :goodbyecruelworld:

I'm glad they're doing pushups as punishment, I can't tell you how much that strategy helped my Jr. High team in the SKL postseason.

Don't they think that maybe this should have been worked on like maybe....last spring?  Did the defensive coaches just sit on their hands for the last year? Last year I remember several HCBS quotes about practice changes they were going to make to correct deficiencies and the D got better throughout the year.  This year all that happened was the D got progressively worse.  Did HCBS mettle in the D more and push the DCs last year since VK was new to his staff and this year he sat back and trusted Cosh to do his job and he didn't?  Are maybe we seeing he JL influence on practices?

Cosh makes sure they go all the way down, and lock out their arms at the top.  Billy helps.  IT'S THAT SERIOUS!

When I hear things like "militant style of penance" and "I think we've gotten their attention to a certain degree", I know things are really getting serious.

Thanks for fixing the problem, Bill.

OB has clearly gone to the well that Frank's been dipping his cup into a lot lately.   This "get tough" policy no doubt has shirt tucks everywhere standing a little taller, tucking in their shirts a little tighter, "Coach'll get them boys toughend up, you can tell he's real serious like about this bowl game . . . now rassle me up some supper woman!!"

Nothing and I mean NOTHING says working on fundamentals like having guys do rough ridin' push ups! Just when I thought this staff couldn't get any more Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!), they go and do this... and TOTALLY redeem themselves! Dumbasses.
We are K-State and we love to hire SHlTTY coaches.

I'm assuming Snyder is fixing Cosh with pushups as well.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.  I'm just glad Bill is fixing us with pushups as opposed to fixing us with better assistant coaches.

Man, I love this "Junction Boys' bullshit.

Let's make everyone run until they puke and do pushups until their arms fall off.  That will really help them when that short, fat, balding turd of a defensive coordinator has them running into each other like a bunch of blind kids driving bumper cars.

Great work, Bill.  Way to address the root cause.

So is Cosh's position safe now that they have been armed with previously untapped pushup power?  Maybe the strength coach should lose his job over this as well.

Hopefully Bill is using pushups to fix our recruiting as well.

Like, I wonder how many pushups are required for every DT recruit we swing and miss on?  And who does them???

No, he just gives them a nice pat on the back, a grandfatherly talk about working hard, and then he hands them some videotape to break down for the next fourteen hours.
