Puerto Rico to hire Pitino? FRANK!!!???!!!
« on: December 15, 2010, 11:38:57 AM »
First Pitino tries to steal Angel and now this?  He is stepping on Frank's toes.   :runaway:

Frank should be begging for the Puerto Rico job.  Would be big feather in his recruiting hat.

If you really wanna do things like Duke, you go get the job coaching the national team and bring home some hardware.

JFC, why would Frank beg for the PR job? Because he is Cuban?

Other than a per diem, Pitino will not receive compensation for taking the job. There are, however, other benefits.

He plans to have the national team practice in Louisville against the Cardinals next summer before taking both teams to the Bahamas for a round-robin tournament. NCAA rules allow programs one foreign trip every four years, and Pitino called the 10 practice days that accompany the trip invaluable.

"We're going to be able to play against the national team 2-3 times and play against NBA-type players," he said. "That's going to be great for our incoming freshmen."

Pitino doesn't anticipate preparations cutting into his recruiting time. The Cardinals have already locked up four players for the 2011 freshman class and could have the 2012 class locked by the spring.

He joked the only Spanish he knows are the words uttered by former Louisville stars Francisco Garcia and Edgar Sosa and doesn't expect there to be any sort of communication barrier.

This.

That quote right there is directed toward one person.    :runaway:

And that one person is named Angel Rodriguez.

Why am I the only one that seems concerned about this?  Did I miss a memo?

I think I'll believe Art Alvarez on this one.  Why would he lie?

OMG.  We are so mumped.

Art Alvarez, a former high school coach and current AAU coach who has helped more than 50 players from Puerto Rico play college ball in the United States, isn't buying it.

Alvarez said Pitino gaining a recruiting advantage is just a small aspect to all of this.

"He said no at first, but the more he thought about it, the more he felt it was a good thing for him to do in his career," said Alvarez, who was at Pitino's news conference Monday morning making it official and will be an adviser to Pitino. "Sure, he'd like to be able to coach a player from Puerto Rico down the road. He's seen guys like Barea and Clemente come through the channels and he knows the talent is very rich."

"He's an icon, a legend — and is going to be a Hall of Famer," Alvarez said. "And there's no doubt once he starts to coach the Puerto Rican national team that any kid from Puerto Rico will look upon signing with Coach Pitino and Louisville as an opportunity to maybe play for the national team."

Didn't Angel already commit to Frank (not KSU)?

As long as Frank stays, Angel comes right?

It's a verbal commitment.  Kinda like the verbal commitment that Josh Freeman gave to Bill Callahan.  Callahan stayed.  Freeman sent him a text.

Ledo to Providence, his hometown school.

I don't think Pitino and L'ville will get IMMEDIATE results from him taking the P.R. job, but I do believe it will pay dividends for them in the future.
