Shirt Tucking
« on: November 30, 2010, 11:17:27 AM »
As I near my 30th Birthday, I am forced to face some issues that I have put off for reasons of my youth.  One of these issues is tucking in my shirt.  Most of the people I work with are old (40's -60's) and therefore tuck any and every shirt into any and every pair of pants regardless of style.  I have always been a non-shirt-tuck kinda guy.  I do wear jeans to work about 60-80% of the time.  Should I start tucking my polo/casual button up into my jeans as I close in on my 30th birthday?  Please advise.

If size matters, I am 6'0" and 170 lbs.  TIA.

It depends on what your job is and how many people you see on a daily basis.

I work for the Federal Gubment (thanks for the pay freeze) and I see lots of people (coworkers, not general public) every day.  Hope this helps.

work is usually a shirt-tuck zone but you can leave your polos untucked if you wear jeans to work.  the main thing you want to avoid is tucking your purple t-shirt into your jeans at KSU events.

Yeah, this really needs to be addressed.  I'm trying to think of a time when it is ok to tuck in a t-shirt........and I can't think of one.

Is shirt-tucking something that will slowly die out in the future, or it is just something that inevitably happens as we get older?

I think it's a habit developed by having to tuck your shirt in at work.

I too work for the Gubment and I am a bit of a higher up person - so I wear a tie about 90% of the time - no manditory, but I LOVE ties - no choice when wearing a tie IMO. BUT, aside from button down collar shirt tucked into slacks - I NEVER tuck.

NEVER tuck a tee shirt.

NEVER tuck into jeans.

NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TUCK ANYTHING INTO SHORTS!!! IMO, the worst is polo tucked into shorts with leather braided belt and topsiders sans socks - I will kick you in the baby-maker if you do the shorts tuck.

I think you just become more complacent and don't give as big of a crap what you look like at 40 and >.  Who are you trying to impress at 40?  Your wife?
Fifteen minutes later, when the Kansas locker room opened its doors to the media, the Jayhawks were still crying. Literally, bawling. All of them. I've never seen anything like it, and I've seen devastated college locker rooms -- after losses in the Final Four, the national championship game -- ever

I don't think this is it.  Shirt tucks believe that non-shirt tucks are "slobs".  Therefore tucking in their shirt is not a way of saying they don't care anymore, in fact, it's quite the opposite.  They view the tuck as a way to dignify themselves above the younger generation of "slobs" and appease other shirt tucks.  Shirt tucks care very much about what other shirt tucks think.

i tuck my shirt in when it's cold out, don't like the chill of a cold winter wind biting my midsection.

Just know that once you have made the decision in the morning to move forward with the tuck that there's no untuck on the horizon. Once you've tucked for the day you're committed. The bottom third of the shirt will be all wrinkly and damp from being in the humidor located underneath your trousers all morning. You're only other option is to go shirt-less for the day and you don't want that.

I'd suggest an untuck with a midday switch to full-on tuck to gauge. Between 2 and 2:30pm. Preferably on a Friday. Walk around for a bit. See how others view you, address you, etc. Proceed from there.

I'm just wondering if it's a generational thing or if we will all become shirt-tucks one day. My Dad just turned 50 and him and his friends shirt-tuck the crap out of everything. But I've seen pictures of when they used to look cool and were fully untucked from back in the day. Got me worried for what the future holds :dunno:

I hope some of you gentlemen realize (I know that some do), that tucking in your shirt is usually a good idea.  It is much better to look and act like a man than some dipshit in seven jeans a fancy logo t/untucked studded button up and dark denim.

The only time tucking your shirt in is ridiculous is when you are wearing a t-shirt/ jersey/ or a polo shirt not related to some type of work and paired with jeans (which should be generally avoided anyway) other than that tucking is advisable.

If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Alright, I have been convinced to become a work-related shirt tuck guy.  But what about fat guys....I think they should avoid tucking in any shirt ever.  They should buy the shirts with the elastic around the bottom that sort of make it look like your shirt is tucked in when it's not.

most people are really shitty dressers.  for the ones who aren't, tucking looks better for older dudes and not tucking looks better for younger dudes.

Fat guys don't look good regardless of shirt tucking/untucking. They should just lose weight.
