beltran isn't worth 3/48.  that would be a poor use of the money.  and if they trade butler to facilitate it...  ridiculous.

stop it.

Pitching will drop off next year.  Our luck is that it drops off in direct proportion to hitting improving, and we merely stay the same.

ok, here's how it could be smart (but maybe a little mean).  sign him for 3/48, then trade him after the first year.  keep butler.

3/48 is def an overspend, but whatevs, assuming we keep Butler that is a HUGE upgrade to the lineup.

What if David Glass just says eff it and blows all his cash before he dies  :surprised:

Still need another pitcher.

Looks like Vargas + Beltran and they broke the piggy bank on the Santana money.

If the Royals leave Infante sitting out there in favor of that 3rd year to lock up Beltran that would be unfortunate.  However, Infante might not want to play for a loser, whereas Beltran is clearly a gun for hire, despite the coming narrative that we swept the hometown kid off his feet and beat out the Bronx Bombers which will be incessantly repeated if this happens.

Some updates on my free agent wish list.

For $60 million over 5 yrs the Royals could improve dramatically.  Choose your own adventure below and compare it to Ervin Santana.

Offense:
Sign Carlos Beltran- 2 yr x12m = $24 million Royals rumored to offer 3yr $48 million
Sign Omar Infante-  3 yr x$4m = $12 million Predicted AAV of $5-8 million

AND sign at least one starter:

$$$-all in moves
Ubaldo Jiminez - 3 years $35 million (might get priced out of this one)
Hiroki Kuroda - 1 year $20 million (an all-in move to prevent him re-signing w/ Yanks, retiring or going to Japan)
Jason Vargas - 3 years $33 million (lefty, young, reliable, least upside)  SIGNED BY ROYALS (4 yr. $34 million)
ADDED- Ricky Nolasco - 4 years $49 million SIGNED by Twins
ADDED- Phil Hughes - 3 years $24 million SIGNED by Twins

$$- tweeners
A.J. Burnett - 2 yr $20 million  Free Agent (unsigned)
Bronson Arroyo - 2 yr $25 million  seeking AAV of $14 million from Mets, others

$-lotto tickets
Jon Garland - $1 million  Released by Rockies (unsigned)
Edinson Volquez - 1 yr = $6 million or 3 yr x $5 million = $15 million  Free Agent (unsigned)
Josh Johnson - 1 yr x $9 million  (Signed by San Diego for 1 yr $8 million guaranteed $1.25 if he reaches 26 starts)

So if this happens.. do we basically lose the pick we will get for Santana?

I think the Royals still would get their "we're poor" compensation pick:

Be prepared for me to be all over this narrative and to be really romantic about this if it happens.

Is there some sort of moratorium on NL teams signing decent FA's this year? I hate being in the AL.

less money, more years than i would have guessed.  royals should have signed him on the prince fielder plan.

Prince Fielder averages like 157 games a year.  Ellsbury's $ per game played will be interesting to add up.

So who are we expecting to play 2b this year? I'm thinking the Infante ship has sailed once we sign Beltran.

Seems to be my thought.  If he was blown away, wouldn't he have signed yesterday when at the K?

Ken Rosenthal says we're in the hunt for Mark Ellis at 2nd base for $4-5/yr.

Not sure if want.  He adds a little bit of offensive production (.270/.323/.351) but he's 37, and takes a lot of speed off the basepaths.  He's a great defensive 2nd baseman though.

The Yankees are not going to give him 3* years.
