According to the rules, this is a "regulation game" because 5 innings have been completed.

However, a "regulation game" becomes a "suspended game" (which must be completed at a later date from the point play was suspended) if, during an inning the visiting team (in this case the Royals) takes the lead before the inning has been completed, and the home team (Cards) has not retaken the lead.

So, if that driving rain continues and play can't be resumed, looks to me like this becomes a suspended game and will resume at some later date. Problem is, KC doesn't go to STL anymore this season, so I look for a long rain delay before the umps call this one. They'd likely have to resume play on a day both teams have an open date.

In other news, a metor was spotted in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The world will end before this game.

OK, guys, I pulled out my rulebook for hope's sake in case it rains all night.

Under a lengthy and complicated  "NOTE" to the rules I cited earlier in this thread, this game can be bumped into the Royals "W" column if (1) the suspension of the game occurred after the 5th inning, and (2) the Royals are ahead, and (3) the suspended game was the LAST SCHEDULED GAME between the teams in a season.

This is the last game scheduled between the Royals and Cards this season.

This is my read of the rules.

That said, let's hope the rain ends and the Royals get a complete game win.

Now Ryan is reporting, on the Royals' broadcast, that the umpire crew chief--Joe West--can declare this game a "called" game, and that the score can revert to what it was before the 9th inning. If Ryan's correct, and I'm not sure he is, our great 9th inning could be washed and we lose.

Ryan also fears that Country Joe will declare the game "called" because he and his crew have to drive to Chicago for a Friday day game, and will want to get some sleep.

Joe, if all this is true...rent a big stretch limo (you'll personally need it), declare this game a "suspended" game, then sleep in luxury all the way to Chicago.

After all, you guys just have to ump. The Royals have to get on a plane, fly to Texas, bus to their hotel, check in...then actually play a game Friday.

Damn. Physioc just said play may (with an emphasis on may) resume at 1:30 a.m. Best case scenario, it seems.

Gotta turn in, sad to say. Clients await. Hoping to wake up in the morning to find out the Royals won.

Maybe the Royals need to draft more Bat Cats:

I dunno, Ned seems to really think bus rides are good for team comradie. The trip to STL didn't Se tondo the trick, so maybe a bus ride to DFW will get the team going in the right direction. It certainly worked for Doyle and Co.

I'd say there's more to Brett serving as hitting coach than just that. I suspect he's also been assigned to get a feel for the team, the chemistry, the clubhouse, etc., and report back to Moore. The added upside is that I think he'll be a great presence in the dugout and the clubhouse--he'll be the one proven winner there. Can't help but do some good.

My theory is he's getting a feel for coaching, see if he can connect to the younger guys, as an audition for taking over as manager next year.

If he's a crabby Ted Williams who is annoyed by the kids who can't seem to understand what he's trying to tell them or if his brand of philosophy works with Moose and Hos.

I hope he can pull it off.  He's about the only guy left who really cares about the organization.

Great day to be a Royals fan.  Always good to wake up and find out that the Royals won a game that finished after the bars closed.
