This was a good trade. Why are people upset about this? Do you guys not realize that the main reason to have good prospects is so that you can trade them for proven commodities?

To that point, we do have to consider this:

Quote
Rany Jazayerli @jazayerli
I'll say this for the Royals: no one's blaming David Glass today. Payroll's around $80 million. This is all on Dayton Moore, good or bad.

I hate David Glass, but the payroll is now at a number that we have longed for.

agree with all of this.  we've never had bats and quality pitching at the same time, now we do.

Here's why Royals fans are upset. Our farm system security blanket is gone. We have sucked the last few years but at least would could say "just wait until ____ gets to the big leagues."  Now we don't have that anymore. We have to win now. And this move should help us win now. But most Royals fans are so comfortable with their farm system security blanket that they would rather have it than make moves that put the pressure on to compete now.

This

I'm with you guys.

Royals fans have been asking for management to go out and get pitching for a long, long time and they finally did. They only way to get decent players was to overspend or trade good prospects.

All that said, I'm a pretty casual Royals fan and LBBIQ, so there's that.

I feel better about this than I did after it broke last night. Especially if Wade Davis can stay healthy and in the rotation for the next couple of years... If that's the case, this significantly improves our rotation and parting ways with Myers makes sense.

My main concern was weather or not Shields should have been the target of this trade. Honestly I don't follow the Rays too closely. I think he's good... but worth giving up what we did? I don't think this makes us better than the Tigers, but we might actually have a reason to watch baseball in August and September for the next two years.

The real question that I need answered is why James Shields was worth this? Is he that good? What is it about Shields that the proponents here love?

Maybe... but like you said earlier Pete, the bar for a professional baseball team may have never been lower than it is right now in KC. If we even just have a winning record, that will be enough for Dayton to point to and say "Look at what I did!" and lots of KC Royals fans, returning from years of apathy will lap it up.

Does time value of money apply here? Are wins today more valuable than wins tomorrow? I'm starting to think so.

Obviously SD... we're going to be like the Rangers next year. Like literally "WATCH OUT!" in left center field if you're sitting there... I'm predicting multiple fan deaths in the outfield next year at the "K" from all that POP!

Although... and allow me to reply to my own post please... We did just part ways with the best power hitter we've had in the organization since Beltran... so there's that.

It's like everyone got super attached to the idea that the Royals are going to win in 2015 or 2016

The goal of a baseball organization isn't to get a ton of great prospects and continually have a great farm system.  The goal is to win in the majors.  And this gives them a better chance to win in the next few years.

Guise! Do you think this is the year Billy Butler finally breaks the 30 HR mark? He had 29 last year and rumor has it he's been eating alot of biscuits(covered in country gravy) and has really added some POP to his bat.

Also is this our starting lineup on opening day.

1. Escobar SS
2. Gordon LF
3. Butler DH
4. Hosmer 1B
5. Mooouuuuusssseeeee 3B
6. Perez C
7. Frenchy RF(GROSS)
8. Giovatelli or getz 2B(Gross on Getz)
9. Cain CF

P. James Shields

Thats pretty SALTY if you ask me. I would be okay with switching escobar and cain and moving frenchy down in the lineup.

Your position is clear... But there are a handful of pitchers that would give us "a better chance to win in the next few years" that wouldn't have cost us our two best prospects and then some.

What is it that you love about James Shields? Please count the ways here.
