If we signed Zobrist, we can see what is available on the market for 2B or OF and pick which one to try and upgrade.  That would be a pretty nice luxury to have.
That's sounds ideal, but Infante is under contract thru 2017.

How many 37 year old baseball players are productive? Zobrist's numbers seem to be on a pretty steep decline. He's still a solid player, but I'm not sure how much longer that will be the case.

A pretty steep decline??  Did you even look at his stats.  His ave and OBP right now are the highest they have been since 2009.

2011/2012--- those 2 yrs he ave  20 HRs and 49 2b/3b in about 660 plate appearances
2015-- he has 10 HRs and 27 2b/3b in about 345 plate appearances

Is he a better player now than he was 3-4 years?  I don't think he is, but hardly a steep decline.
He doesn't possess as much HR power, but he has shown he can hit a lot of Xtra base hits and his OnBase has been very consistent the last few years.

He also is a lot slower and a lot worse defensively. I was mostly comparing WAR, which is on pace to be about 1/3 of what it was just a year or two ago. He's a good player, but I think he will be well below average 3 years from now.

right, but the hypothetical question is, if his agent is shopping that 3-yr contract, do you pay for that third suck-ass year in order to get two good years of Zob - when we control the majority of our studs in that same 2 year window.

I mean, the answer is obviously hell yes.  likewise with Gordon.  we know he's looking for a long-term deal.  every team knows that at the tail end of that deal he won't be as good as at the front end.  but, if you can get 5 years of good Gordo, you're prob willing to deal with 2 years of old man gordo down the road in 2020.

Just as long as my guy Gordon gets to finish his career as a Royal. That's all that matters.

There are other options, though, especially if the club likes Mondesi.

dWAR is known to have a lot more noise than oWAR on a season to season basis, and especially for someone moving around to so many different positions, you would expect a lot of volatility.  I wouldn't read a ton into that, unless you think he is actually a much worse defender all of a sudden.

just from eyeball testing him - he's pretty bad in the outfield.  slow and not great on reads.  given how many bad defensive corner outfielders there are in the world, he may be about average - but you compare him to someone like gordon or dyson and it's night and day.

at second, he looks fine.  prolly have to look at stats to see how his range compares to others, but just visually, he seems fine.

yeah, they're probably gonna suck anyways in 2018, so may as well suck with an old shitty zobrist if that gives you a better chance to excel in 2016 and 2017.

i don't know what other options are out there at 2nd though.  i wouldn't want to overate/overpay zobrist just because he's currently on the team.  oh, and i wouldn't want him for the outfield.  if he can fill in elsewhere in emergencies, that's great, but i'd only want him if he'd be the everyday 2nd baseman.

Since we are facing 3 lefties Orlando is going to have a great opportunity to make his case for the playoff roster this weekend. I hope he rakes.

Id rather have lost this game with a good duff outing than win with a bad outing
