Looking forward to the Red Sox series. We haven't fared well in bandbox stadiums, and get to face a relatively hot team on the road. I think we win 3.

The BoSox have been scoring runs a lot lately. We're playing them in their bandbox. I'll be satisfied with a split.

I've fallen harder for Zobrist than I should given the temporary nature of this relationship and the fact that he's 30+

Good chance we resign him for another 2 or 3 years.  Loving him is OK, especially if he helps us win a WS.

Plenty of players +30 are productive and signing big contracts.  Alex Gordon will be one of them.  Dude is solid and will get a 2-3 yr contract from somebody.  I hope it's us.

How many 37 year old baseball players are productive? Zobrist's numbers seem to be on a pretty steep decline. He's still a solid player, but I'm not sure how much longer that will be the case.

His slugging had declined since he's progressed through his 30s but his OPS/OPS+/OBP/AVG are pretty similar season to season.

And if he keeps it up through the end of this year, it'll be one of his best years of his career.

He's batting .165 with a .514 ops since the all star break. Old guys wear down in a 162 game season.

And he's 40 now.  Also, end of career in sight/realization playoffs are out.  Had a productive year last year though.

Zobrist just turned 34, I'm not sure this is the greatest comparo.

A-Rod is still going strong at 40.

I would feel comfortable if the Royals gave him a 2 or 3 year contract.  I mean he can't go downhill and be any worse than Rios.

His WAR is way, way down. That said, I'm not sure how well the WAR statistic works for someone who plays as many different positions throughout the year as Zobrist does.

I'd be looking to extend my guy Rios out another year or two after 16.

His WAR is way way down mostly as a result of his dWAR being way down. dWAR is known to have a lot more noise than oWAR on a season to season basis, and especially for someone moving around to so many different positions, you would expect a lot of volatility.  I wouldn't read a ton into that, unless you think he is actually a much worse defender all of a sudden.

From what I've seen, he's our 5th best outfielder defensively and about on par with Infante at second. His bat has been great, though.

He's won multiple games for us in the short span he's been here.  I'd say his dubWAR is about a 2.5 with the royals so far.

You're probably right.  But, our outfield is likely the best in all of baseball and Infante is quite good 2b.  So, basically, Zobrist is very good in the field and great with the bat.

yeah, lock him up for another 2 years.

We lose the last 3 games without Zobrist. He's either scored or batted in 8 of our last 11 runs.

I think he's average in the field, and well above average at the plate. That makes him a very valuable player, overall. I think a 2 year deal would be great. A 3 year deal would be too much, though.

He is average to above average at 6 or 7 defensive positions too, which inflates his defensive value quite a bit

What would our other options be? Will Justin Upton make more than Gordon and Zobrist combined? Is Mondesi any good?

If we signed Zobrist, we can see what is available on the market for 2B or OF and pick which one to try and upgrade.  That would be a pretty nice luxury to have.

A pretty steep decline??  Did you even look at his stats.  His ave and OBP right now are the highest they have been since 2009.

2011/2012--- those 2 yrs he ave  20 HRs and 49 2b/3b in about 660 plate appearances
2015-- he has 10 HRs and 27 2b/3b in about 345 plate appearances

Is he a better player now than he was 3-4 years?  I don't think he is, but hardly a steep decline.
He doesn't possess as much HR power, but he has shown he can hit a lot of Xtra base hits and his OnBase has been very consistent the last few years.
