I can't belive no one has brought this up, but I imagine Ned saw Cueto and (wrongly) thought, "obviously I should be leaving my starters in longer" and then two days later acts on that. So here we are. In agreement with mocat, I think, but maybe it was someone else, it's not that big of deal in the grand scheme of things. But we were 5 games away from breaking the record. I wanted to make history. We all did, I bet. And now the only way we can make history is by winning the whole damn thing. Hopefully Ned's realization of this mistake helps us in our goal to do that.

He pitches Herrera 4 of 5 nights.  Now he hasn't pitched in 2 straight games and doesn't want to pitch him for a 3rd straight.  He doesn't seem sure what he wants

to be fair to yost, it's gotta be pretty hard trying to juggle the bullpen while trying to rest davis and young.  that only leaves a pretty small group of relievers that are actually available, and it's gotta be difficult to manage that without overusing them.  especially since many of the ones that are available to use have had stretches recently where they haven't been very effective.

if young was available (obviously he was), then it's easy to second guess and say that he should have pitched young for the last two innings.  but i'd guess they wanted to save him for today where they can reasonably expect to need more reliever innings and probably don't want to use medlen yet.  it's also easy to second guess and say they should have just thrown maddie and holly.  but again, looking forward to the guthrie and duffy starts - it's easy to see why he wanted to try and just get by with one more inning of volkie and then holly.

there's probably a good reason that i'm not aware of, but i really don't understand why they didn't just put young on the dl.  carrying him on the active roster for two weeks without using him has strained the bullpen.

young will be used in the next 2 games for sure, although replacing guts with young is like, the same thing

Going into the 8th, Volquez had retired 13 straight, and resting the pen should be a super high priority for Ned, so I'm fine with him out there.

After that, its flukey. The ball that stayed fair on that swinging bunt, was just luck. Escobar not fielding the ball hit to him when the infield was in, was just a fluke, and then Hos throws home and we can't get the tag down. Its baseball, innings like that happen.

At some point we were going to lose after leading late.

Everything needs to be viewed on the macro, rather than micro level from here on. Big picture. Health. Trends.

Last night was just kinda unlucky, and Ned would NEVER manage like that in October. Butera would NEVER get an AB in the 9th in October.

At this point I'm only concerned with winning home field throughout the playoffs. That's the only reason last night sucked. I think we still have a 6 game lead but those scumbags up north are closing fast.

AppleJack would you mind explaining to me how a team from Toronto is in the American League?

yeah cf3,

to your macro point - winning home field is a macro issue.

holding onto a 2 run lead going into the 8th is a game we need to win.

neither kelvin or madsen had pitched in 3 days. he should have gone to the pen to start the 8th or after 1 base runner made it on.

volqy had done well, but the 3rd time through the order isn't very kind to him (or anyone really, outside of johnny cueto of course).

toronto at home is the best team in the A.L.

but they are significantly worse on the road.

we have to keep this lead. they wiped out the yankee's 7 game lead in like 9 days.

i'm not comfortable with giving up leads late and waving it off. those guys are going to keep winning and winning a lot.

I'm fine with all that, and I don't think Ned will do that again this year. Regardless, there was 1 hard hit ball in all that- Kinsler's double.

I'm going out on a limb. Toronto will lose 3 out of the next 4, even though all their games are at home. Remember this post Sunday around 4 PM when you see "NYY 5 TOR 2" scroll across the bottom of your television program

if Toronto did the impossible and made it a 20 game winning streak, and the royals stayed at their average ho hum snoozy pace of .600, they would still be back 2 games. oh and toronto has like a million games left vs teams with winning records

At some point we were going to lose after leading late.

1) I don't want to overuse the Pen, but we will have more pitchers on the roster here in less than 3 weeks, so that can help rest the Pen then
2)  I agree with Sys that it's puzzling they just sat Young as long as they did with no action.  At the same time, Medlen has only thrown twice in last 2 weeks.
3) we need to keep 1 of those 2 available so if mid relief is needed, we have 1 of them.... But you can mix an outing in that's shorter for Med/Young every now and then.

4) he could have used Herrera/Holly last night.  That would have been only the 4th inning in last 16 days for Holly, so he is not being overused. 4 other relievers would have had at least 3 days off. Plus I heard Wade should be available for this upcoming series vs LA.
5) bottom line...IMO... We could have thrown H-H and been totally fine. Herrera would have been the only guy that I would have said was "unavailable" for today then

I had no issue with Volqy starting the 8th.  But the past 2 years, Volqy when facing a lineup for the 4th time, has now given up a .467 Ave and .543 OnBase. So he needs to be on short leash. After the single or the Single/4 pitch walk, he should have been pulled.  Never should have faced Iglesias and Kinsler a 4th time in that spot

Again, I don't think Ned will do that again, and again, the inning had some luck to it for Detroit.
