our starters pitched 986 2/3 innings in the 2014 reg season, 3rd most in the AL. our starters' ERA was 3.60, 4th best in the AL.
how many runs did they give up due to Ned having to try to stretch them to HDH? i don't know, i don't remember. could be very few, could be a lot.

this is what i do know about our 2014 relief staff:

Aaron Rough Riding Crow pitched 59 innings (4.12 ERA)
Louis Dick Flopping Coleman pitched 34 innings (5.56 ERA)
Francisley Fire Proofing Bueno pitched 32.1 innings (4.18 ERA)
Michael Marcus Mariota Mariot pitched 25 innings (6.48 ERA)
Tim Boss Tom Collins pitched 21 innings (3.86 ERA)

Dang Timmy was a little better than I thought!

Will Finn compete for a starting spot in spring training? Or is he automatically in the pen?

i don't think hoch will cost over 3 million.  significantly less, i'm guessing.  i'd love to see him back.

shields wasn't cheap last year.  they can spend just a little more and get a good pitcher (if there are any, not sure what is available).  it doesn't have to be an ace v vargas choice.

Why do some of you idiots keep saying we need to get an ace? Ourdano may be better next year than anyone available other than Scherzer. Ventura, Duffy, Guthrie, Vargas is a pretty decent rotation still. Add another pitch to contact innings eater and let the D do its thing.

This year's roster was barely good enough to make the playoffs, so losing Shields and replacing him with an innings-eater while not making a significant improvement anywhere else all but guarantees no playoffs next year. The window for success with this roster is closing a whole lot faster than a lot of us want to believe and if this team wants to get back to the World Series, next season is their best bet. They need to go all in with free agency and put a better roster on the field next year than they did this year.

And you don't do that by overspending for a pitcher like Shields who is in the steady decline stage. Ventura showed that he has the stuff to be an ace of a staff and as I said before I believe he will be better next season than any FA pitcher that's not Scherzer and I expect him to be a better ace than Shields was this season. If he struggles next season the Royals aren't going to the playoffs next season no matter who they sign.

If they're going to spend big money in FA it needs to be at RF or DH, the two areas that could realistically be improved through FA. I know Moose is considered a weak spot too, but just take a look around at the 3B situation league wide. Unless Panda can somehow be lured here there is no real improvements out there.

Royals picked up Davis' $7M option for 2015.  :driving:

Well, that's good news, as long as they still have enough money to go get an ace.

Paying for an ace would be the dumbest possible thing the royals could do.  Why would you even suggest that?

I would pay hoch 3 mil in a heartbeat.  He was a dominant reliever in 2012.

Ventura had a better regular season than shields last year.  He was already our ace so stop this talk about he could be better than shields was last year, he already effing was better than shields last year.

Shields was a good, above average pitcher, who was more durable than anyone in the league. The ability to get 6 or 7 every start is huge, however it didn't really translate to postseason ball

It translated to making the postseason, though. Hard to do well in the playoffs when you aren't playing in them.

We need another good starting pitcher. Ventura and Duffy will only get us so far. Go get a right handed batter in RF and Sherzer and let's wrap this thing up.  :excited:

Yes

I think Vargas and Guthrie will still likely be serviceable guys, but they need to be 4 and 5. We need to find one more top 3 level starter to go with Ventura and Duffy.

I think a Scherzer/Ventura/Duffy/Guthrie/Vargas rotation with FHDH in the pen would make us one of the favorites for the WS.

Are they hoping that Hochevar will become a starter, or stay in the pen?

Also bats.  What about the bats?

I'm not sure what the Hoch plan is.

There are rumors about Tori Hunter. Would probably take.
