A good GM can find a suitable replacement for shields.

Spitballing here, but Brandon Mccarthy is 30, currently signed at $9m a year. Less than stellar ERA but has always played in pretty small ballparks. Pitched very well this season after being traded to the Yankees. Could be a Vargas type, for pretty cheap.

This is an excellent example of a pitcher that we could get that would be a better value than Shields. We replace Shields with him and we finish slightly higher than .500 and stay home in October, but at least the ownership didn't overpay.

Or maybe they optimized resources in a way that allowed us to continue our success.

if they're going to spend shields-type money, it definitely shouldn't be on shields.

Yep

And Butler isn't worth his coin.  Surely you can find somebody to DH. Also, someone to backup Salvy so he isnt so crappy and "worn down" for our playoff runs.

Awaiting the inevitable KITN

by the time I had gotten to the point of buying those big cans I was like 10'ish normal sized cans into the game so I didn't really pay attention to the OZs other than noticing the can was jumbo.

I think fanning is right, and we need to go all in on Scherzer. Anybody who is not at least as good as James Shields isn't going to be good enough for this team to make the playoffs next year.

Hey captain snark are you aware we're in the World Series? Because you're awful snarky. Cubs were in one in 1945, for comparison.

They should have signed Shields in '46.
