We'd be paying shields for his past, not what he will be. His will continue to regress, and we can make the playoffs again without him, by being smarter with our money. There are other options. Paying for the past is stupid.

Yeah, that's an extremely legitimate concern. James has pitched a ton of innings; he'll be at nearly 940 IP over the last 4 seasons by the time we're done this year.

The Cardinals let the Angels pay Pujols for the past. The A's let teams pay their aging players all the time. You're about to see the Tigers fall off a cliff in 2015 IMO. Let's learn from winning franchises, not be stupid.

Every franchise falls off a cliff at some point. You build for a World Series run, and once you get there, you overpay and sacrifice your future to make it happen. We are already in the World series. We need to stop building and try to get back there again next year. The team will fall off a cliff in a few years, and then we can start thinking value again.

'Cause this has worked so well before?  :dunno:

Worked pretty well in 2014 IIRC. I mean, we're in the World rough ridin' Series and we didn't get here by signing 32 year old free agents to hundred million dollar 5 year contracts.

One of the main things I noticed last night was James getting squeezed on the corners the first two batters. I really feel like that made a major factor in his performance. He wasn't getting the calls on the edges and he forced himself to start throwing over the plate. I really think that messed with him.

I have only watched the post season.  Regular season is statistically more for losers than winners.

You don't let a shaky postseason pitcher go in favor of a cheaper alternative that can't get you to the postseason. If the Royals let Shields go, they had better sign somebody who is really good.

James was just all over the place in the first inning. I don't think he handles high pressure games all that well.

That's what i've been saying tho. They won't go get some average joe. They've got some $ freeing up with the potential departure of Billy and Shields, plus the $ they've made in the post season. I listenend to a glass interview the other day where he said he wanted to use that $ in the off season. I think we'll go after a nice gun.

Me too.

I think we all agree that the Royals have to go get someone good if they let Shields go, and I'm fine with that. And by "good" I mean something better than Vargas like last offseason.

The Royals are obviously built to win now and we've still got a window of a couple more years to do so. This World Series is fantastic, but I'm hopeful we can be a postseason contender for the next several years until guys move on and we have to rebuild.

I do wanna say, @cartierfor3, the Royals have re-energized me. I'm not that good/great at a lot of things, but baseball was one of them growing up. It's also why I have the beaten kid syndrome with them, like you have with the Chiefs. I mean, the last time they were good, I was in a high chair playing with peas. The game of baseball has always meant a lot to me, because I really understand it and I really enjoy it. This run has been so amazing for me and just what my family has needed in a time of need. It's amazing what a great sports team can do for a city and it's citizens as they work through their everyday struggles. Let's go get game two!

Its been a blast. I love how many people in the city are seeing how great baseball can be, and how fun this team has been to follow the past few years. I'm glad your fam is enjoying the ride. After Game 4 ALCS, I got to meet up with my Dad and celebrate behind the Royals dugout that we won a pennant. The Royals have given this town a great gift. I really want to win tonight tho, so that we can move from "happy to be here" mode to "let's win the World Series" mode.

Duffy's post game comments confirm (again) that he's broke

Broke Duffy is obviously superior to whatever Shields has.   Shoot him up and run him out there.
His command was a bit off last night. I think I saw a little bit of the concerns that Ned has had and what @sys, @thebigtrain, and I have covered.

Petro was just talking about how he's "heard" that Duffy may have some sort of ding/strain in his groin or core. Also, when asked about his injury last week Ned specifically said "Yes, Duffy's shoulder and arm are 100% healthy". That would make some sense; he is pitching so they probably aren't concerned about his arm, but they don't trust him to start or pitch more than 3-4 innings. :dunno:

i did notice he had a little hitch in his giddy-up last night walking off the mound.  he was also doing that little hop thing after release that to me looks like he wasn't fully committed to his follow thru

very contradictory statements
the royals haven't given this town crap but i think the statement encapsulates a lot of royals fans' mentality.  it's unfortunate that any royals fan would think that way.

If you don't think the Royals winning the pennant was a wonderful moment, and a gift to the city, I would disagree whole heartedly.

was it a wonderful moment? of course it was, but that's not what you said.

calling the pennant a gift is where we disagree.  that pennant was bought and paid for by 29 years worth of fan support and tax dollars.  we've more than quadrupled the value of the franchise since glass bought the team.  he's continually profited off the backs of this fanbase while delivering a crap product year after year.  we gave him the gift, no where close to the other way around.
