I am kinda old balls, and have a pretty good recollection of 1985.  Not the details of every game, but definitely games 6 and 7.  Great feelings about those memories.

So, last night was tough for me...I am sure it was for a lot of people.  I had a hard time thinking big picture.  It was very painful to see the Royals lose badly in a World Series game.  Can't really explain it,  except to say that it hurt quite a bit.  Not really rational, I know.

Guys our only hope last night was for a shutout from James for 6 innings, and we all knew that was extremely unlikely. We just went 8 games, and IMO faced only one elite starter (Lester) and won them all. In the postseason, at some point if you make the World Series, you'll face a great pitcher, and that was last night. Once we were down 3-0, it was going to be a rough go of it. A couple non-Shields things really disappointed me though. First, Hosmer's swing in the 1st was the hardest hit ball off the Giants all night (more than Salvy's) and for it not to fall gives us a taste of what that's like. If that falls, a run scores, runner on 2nd with Billy up, and Billy swung the bat well all night and could've changed the game, like he did in the Wild Card game 1st inning. Hos's ball gets caught, that's bad luck and that's baseball. Also, Escobar had been so much better at pitch recognition in the post season, and in his 1 key AB (3rd inning) both he  and Aoki failed to swing at good pitches, and killed our last real hope of staying within striking distance long enough to get to FHDH. Hopefully tonight Escobar and Salvy (my God I know he hit a homerun but my God Salvy please stop swinging at pitches in the dirt)at least work counts to the point where they are seeing good pitches.

The Giants are playing really well, and we could be in trouble, but I expect us to get some runs tonight and Ventura will be better than Big Joke James. We win game 2 tonight, win either games 3 or 4 in SF, take our beating in Game 5, and hope for the best if it comes back to KC. That's not an unreasonable expectation or hope. win 2 of the next 3 and hope for magic at the K next week.

Finally, I hope this ends the "James Shields changed the culture of the team" narrative. I'm sure there is a little truth to that, and he's a big part of the last 2 seasons, but he was getting much more credit than deserved. The young players were ready finally, Gordon became the best LF in the AL, Salvy became a stud, bullpen was nails, and Shields was a good (not great) veteran pitcher. This was not like when Huggins rolled into Manhattan and everything changed.

And Hunter Pence signs are stupid.

Good post. I agree that winning 2 of the next 3 is key, starting tonight.

And the postseason has changed my last season stance on James; let him go.

I would love to see Santana come back and get a guy like Masterson as well.  You hope one of those guys can be reliable as a starter the entire year.  I don't see us bringing Shields back.  This is his last chance to get big money.

First, I still think we should go Duffy and not Shields, but whatever......

2nd, they said on Espn this am that Ventura throws the heat, and SF hitters love them some fastballs, esp. in the 95-100 range, so basically they were saying game 2 is all SF...retards

3rd, they said last night that back in '85, we lost the first 2 at home and were down 3-1 and won the whole thing, so even if we lose 2nite, don't lose hope. Although the winner of game 1 has won 10 of the last 11, so odds are not in our favor, but they haven't been in our favor all playoffs, so eff that.....

I have lost hope w/ Shields though....

Here is another list we should be looking at.  I bolded a couple guys that could be good fits for the Royals.  We will lose Aoki.  We need a guy with a bigger bat who can still play solid defense.

Outfielders
Norichika Aoki
Emilio Bonifacio
Melky Cabrera
Nelson Cruz
Michael Cuddyer
Chris Denorfia
Jeff Francoeur
Jonny Gomes
Franklin Gutierrez
Tony Gwynn Jr.
Scott Hairston
Torii Hunter
Raul Ibanez
Reed Johnson
Ryan Lukwick *
Nick Markakis *
Darnell McDonald
Mike Morse
Colby Rasmus
Alex Rios *
Nate Schierholtz
Grady Sizemore
Seth Smith
Alfonso Soriano
Denard Span *
Ichiro Suzuki
Ryan Sweeney
Josh Willingham
Chris Young
Delmon Young

the bar has really been lowered on duffy, if people think he pitched well.  he wasn't a total disaster, which i guess was a possibility.

85 is a bad comparison because we lost the first 2, but had 2 of the next 5 with Sabrehagen starting. We don't have anyone like him this time. If SF beats up on Ventura tonight, so be it. They wouldn't be here if they weren't a good team too. We do have to give them credit. That's not the Astros out there.

I think its just because he was better than Shields.

In '85 our game 2 loss was much more devastating that last night. (I read this, I didn't remember it. I do remember games 6 and 7 fairly well). The Royals took a 2-0 lead to the top of the 9th and Howser left starter Charlie Leibrandt in instead of bringing in Quisenberry and the Cards scored 4 runs to win 4-2.

If we don't get James, we at least need somebody comparable. So unless Glass is willing to overspend for somebody better, he had better overspend on James.

Not doing everything possible to get back to the postseason next year would be a big mistake.
