Yanks beat Detroit. We gained a half-game on the Tigers for the division, but the Yanks moved a half in front of us for the Card.

Need to sweep the D-Backs. Goldschmidt is now out for the season, so they're weaker today than they were last week.

BTW. Would you rather have Kirk Gibson or Ned Yost?

Hint: Kirk has a division title. Ned got fired in September when he was chasing one with the Brewers.

Every single time I've thought the Royals "need to [insert criteria]," the Royals have not done that thing.

That's because they didn't really "need to [insert criteria]." Otherwise, they would be out of the hunt.

nicname my head tells me this team is too flawed offensively, and we'll end up about 3 or 4 games over .500 and home. But we're close. Too close for me to step away. Close enough that with a few lucky breaks, we might experience something special. Haven't we had enough bad luck to have earned the right to some good luck? And in a 1 game playoff, who knows, anything can happen.

I'm cautiously hopeful.

My head has the same trepidations as yours. I've chosen to follow my heart, lean on optimism, and find evidence of success. I'm inviting a huge heartache if things don't go right, but I'm all in. My team has never been this close.

If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Detroit is starting to come back to earth in one-run games. I think they've lost like five of them in a row or something.

So, short term, we can expect them to win some so that evens out?  Even a season is too small a sample size to expect a normal distribution of W/L for one run games

Sounds like they need a series with the Royals to get them back on track.

Absolutely nailed it.

Last year at this point we were 7.5 back in the Central and never got closer than 6.5 the rest of the season. It may not be by a lot, but we're in a better spot now and I'm going to continue to believe. Go Royals.

just keep winning series at this point and everything will work itself out. a sweep should happen the dbacks are rough ridin' awful

if they win every series from here out they would be 37-16

making them about twenty games over .500 and most assuredly in the drivers seat for the wild card with over 90 wins. not probable but possible and an attainable goal

Has a team ever won every series from this point of the season till the end? Serious question.

Luckily, we probably don't have to win every series from this point to make the wildcard.

loving the Royals hate in this thread. they dont need to sweep anyone. they just took a series in oakland, theyre fine. just stick around and keep winning series. other teams will fall out of the race. they still have a game against the yankees at home, dont forget.

so you think the royals can make the playoffs without sweeping a single series the rest of the way?

Sure they can. All they have to do is win every series from here on out.

yes. at this time last year, the second wild card team had 63 wins and the royals were 4 games back. this year the second wild card has 60 wins and the royals are 1.5 games back. its very possible they could win all but one or two of their remaining 16 or so series without a sweep or getting swept, they would finish with around 89-90 wins. 92 wins got the second WC last year. 90 could get the royals in this year. thatd be .635 from here on out, and theyve won 7/10 and 9/12 since being swept by the sox.

is that mathematical enough for you, 'blast?

You guys are still talking about the playoffs? I'm trying to figure out who I want us to play when we get to the World Series.
