Did NOT expect there to be a full page of chiefs discussion in here with no fanning posts.

Also, I swear to god if you mother rough riders bring up the chiefs again, I'm cracking rough ridin' skulls.

what if, like, say, the boys in blue are +7 games out of the division and wild card during training camp, can we spitball about the dorks over at 1 arrowhead drive a little bit then??

tough call who to start in the first game of a playoff series. i think it's definitely worth a pretty interesting discussion. i think matchup would have a lot to do with it. if you're the manager, what are your factors?

season ERA?
last month ERA?
previous start quality?
career playoff experience?
intangibles?
average innings per start?
is the game in KC fly ball pitcher wet dream or is it in camden yards?
season/career ERA vs opponent?

you guys are pretty quick to hand duffy the reins (although if he is still sub-3 after THE ENTIRE REST OF THE SEASON then i think there is no question who your ace is)

yes. lot of variables in play. i trust vargas to go deeper into the game than duff or yordano..

do you guys think going deep in games is more or less important in the playoffs? i guess *everything* is more important in the playoffs but my point is, pitch counts certainly are less important. i'm not worried about blowing somebody's arm out if he's finished with 7 scoreless innings and he's at 108 pitches. i'm trotting that MF out there for the 8th 10 times out of 10 if it's the playoffs.
the bullpen is a strength of the royals, but with a 5-game series, you can't just use davis + holland 5 straight days, so you want a guy out there who has demonstrated his ability to go deep.

1. Vargas 6.594 innings per start
1. Guthrie 6.594
3. Shields 6.456
4. Ventura 5.873
5. Duffy 5.827

btw, it is incredible that all 5 of our starters are THAT good at pitching deep into games

yeah, i don't give an eff about pitch counts in the playoffs. i just care about their ability to continue to be effective as the pitch count adds up.

vargas has been really consistent and effective late in games. if he could go seven strong give up 2 or less and hand it to davis and holland to close it out, i would take it every time.

Jeff Montgomery, former Royals closer and current Royals postgame analyst, says that Shields’ normally devastating change-up is lacking its usual bite in recent starts. Monty explained that KC’s ace is dropping his arm slot, making the pitch just spin instead of getting yanked down with a more over-the-shoulder delivery to create its late break. Maybe — and hopefully — Monty is right and this is a simple problem with mechanics. KC insists so far that it has nothing to do with injuries or fatigue, and with such a proven workhorse, fans should and will take them on their word — for now.

do this fix first and if it doesn't work then shoot him for the insurance money.

Ned said in post game tonight that Shields' mechanics "look good" and he doesn't have any "level of concern" about Shields. Whose opinion on pitching mechanics do I trust more--Monty's or Ned's?  Monty's, of course. Ned being Ned.

Ned can't possibly believe half the things he tells the media. "Jamesey is just workin through a slump, it happens, there isn't a lot you can do. A lot of times something as simple as starting a new month will snap you out of it."

Ned knows that is bullshit, but he is a protect-your-players manager, plus of course, he thinks media/ fans are rubes.

If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

I'm willing to ruin everyone one of our pitchers if we make it to the playoffs. I'm talking about like 200 type pitch counts per game if they're performing. The more the merrier.
