it's a skill set thing. his skill set is best used running down fly balls and not in the middle infield. also, some people just aren't good at fielding. those people end up in the outfield. so i would read that he isn't a good fielder.

yeah, as an ideal.  i mean in the sense of how the royals didn't have a replacement infielder when infante was out.  also it could be useful sometimes.  like say you want to pr for someone so you need a place to stick dyson after.  more options since you could rotate the infielders around and stick dyson at 2nd.  so basically you could then replace anyone but the catcher.

well sure this would be ideal. again, i would say that he just isn't a good fielder and that's why he's in the outfield to begin with. you rarely see an outfielder that can play the infield. much more common to see an infielder that can also play outfield. outfielders as a group are there for a reason and it isn't usually a good one.

ok.  but 2nd base doesn't seem that hard.

Its not that they always lose, all the time for the last oh 20ish years, its that they do it in such spectacularly incompetent and mind numbing stupid ways.

harder than right field though. basically a shortstop w/ a worse arm.

Guys at what point do they take a good hard look in the mirror and say "Hey, maybe a backup shortstop would be a good idea, you know, just in case"?

They have to right? Right?

Most teams would do that, but this is the team of Moore and Yost.

And from the Royals website postgame story:

If the 10th-inning injury had forced Escobar to leave the game, that would have presented an interesting dilemma. Backup infielders Danny Valencia and Jimmy Paredes were already out of the game. Who would play where?

"Good question," Yost said. "Gordon was going to come to third, Omar [Infante] was going to go to short, Moose [Mike Moustakas] was going to go to second and probably [pitcher Michael] Mariot was going to go to left."

More like 30ish years.  The Royals are by far the most inept franchise in all of major sports.  You literally have to try to not make the playoffs 29 consecutive years.

I think this year sets the baseball record, which may also be all major sports record.

More like 20ish. 1986-1994 the Royals were good, not great, and just happened to have Oakland and Minnesota in their division who were great at the time. 13 over in August 94 at the time of the strike.

Baseball is all that matters. If the playoffs were like NBA/NHL, the Royals would've made it several times. Also, you're a nice guy but I want you to know that soccer is lame. Still pals though.

The Royals embarrassing non-playoff streak is by far the longest in professional sports, and it's not even really close.

Nothing in the NBA, NHL, or NFL is remotely on par.  In the MLB, after the Nationals made the playoffs in 2012 after 30 years, KC has sole claim to the longest active postseason drought at 28 years, followed by the Blue Jays at 20 years, while all others are at 11 years or less.

Sys.  My fantasy baseball league has pretty much confirmed that carrying a bunch of relievers is more effective than paying/trusting starters.  The only problem is roster sizes.  Having enough guys with option years and keeping enough space on the 40 man roster would make it difficult to pull off well.  I think having a stars and scrubs approach would be preferable though.  Put 2/3rds of your pitching budget toward two studs and then have them pitch on three or four days rest and have them go 4-5 innings and have a rotating bullpen cover the rest of the innings and days.  You would just need so many arms to do it and you would need to constantly replenish your farm system because other teams would snatch up guys in the rule 5 draft that you showed can pitch.
