Soler has 4 years of control. Wade had 1, injury trouble, and effectiveness had trended down (though still great). I like this risk. If Soler is great in a full time role, we can contend. If not, he should help soften the fall in 2018-2020

Contend for what?

if it's just davis for soler, that seems like it really sucks.

why

because people say soler sucks and his stats do suck and i've personally witnessed that davis is good.  but maybe soler will stop sucking and davis will stop being good and it will be a huge win trade.

getting just Soler sucks. I was all on board last night when it looked like we were going to get Happ as well, but just getting a corner outfielder who is mediocre now, and has a ceiling that is lower than being an all-star seems like a steal for the Cubs.

That is certainly not his ceiling. If Royals fans still cared, he would be an all star this season.

Holy crap, the White Sox got Giolito, Reyes and Dunning for Adam Eaton.  If we had a shot and turned that package down for Cain, I'd be pretty upset.

if he's any good, he can opt out of that contract and into arbitration.  i believe after 2017 (might be after 2018?).  15 million is just what the royals have to pay if he sucks complete ass.

There is no way we didn't have a shot at that. I'll be livid if we don't trade Cain for more.

Is comparing Cain and Eaton's trade value really an apples to apples comparison?  I don't know that it is.

Eaton was a 6 WAR player last year with less injury history

Yea so why on earth would we get the same deal or more for Cain?

2+ or those were for superior defense in right field after being a below average center fielder, which is where he'll play this year.  One might expect a similar bump if Cain played right. Steamer projects Eaton +2.4 and Cain +3 next year

I believe this is incorrect, but contracts are tricky, just like knees.

eaton also younger and is under contract for five years, relatively cheaply.  cain is worth a fraction of eaton.

I'm struggling to understand why the best closer in the game only yields a shitty outfielder in a trade.

prolly because our dumbass gm insisted on getting back a mlb ready player and any team that wants a one year rental closer doesn't want to give up a good mlb ready player that could help them in that same year.

also because everyone's afraid his arm is about to fall off.

True, but still just feels like the Cubs got the steal. I didn't realize the health aspect was that much of a biggie until I heard that the Royals granted a physical before the trade.
