The best start I have seen by a Royals player since Zack Greinke was on the bump, was 7 days ago by Johnny Cueto, in a do or die winner take all game 5. He got behind in the game, and then didn't allow a baserunner. He was terrible yesterday, but to not gamble that he's capable of another one like ALDS 5 is stupid. Have a short leash, whatever, but to suggest he be left off the playoff roster (for who? Guthrie? Gomes? GMAFB) is idiotic.

If you have a short leash, you pull Cueto in the second inning of game 5. It's stupid to have him on the mound in the first place. We have better pitchers.

if Cueto pitches again, this will be the case.

however yesterday, Ned specifically said before the game that he was approaching it like a regular season game. now you can agree or disagree with Ned's approach, but he is looking at a 2-0 lead, with three games in a row in a tough place to pitch. once it got out of hand early, he decided EFF IT i'm saving everybody for games 4 and 5. we'll see if it pays off.

duffy in on the roster, i'm not sure what you are driving at there.

the website on my phone didn't list him on the roster for whatever reason.

History/stats prove otherwise. He's had the lowest ERA in the past 5 years vs. like the rest of the league. Yes, I understand his recent trend, but you can't ignore last Wednesdays performance.

And yesterday's game by no means called for a short leash the same way a game 7 will, though he should have been done once Toronto got 6 on Tulo's home run.

This is the problem with some of you baseball geeks...it doesn't always boil down to statistics.  If you've ever played the game, you know playoffs are different than regular season, home is different than away, etc etc.  We are still talking about human beings with brains and feelings and circadian rythyms and god knows what else.

his results were great in game 5.  i'm not as convinced that he was great.  the astros batters panicked and swung at anything close.  give him credit for taking advantage, but he didn't have to make many great pitches to put together a great outing.

let's not forget that the royals have scored 5, 7 and 8 runs in the games cueto has started.  it's fairly likely that if medlen had started those games the royals would have gone 3-0 instead of 2-1.  i'd prefer that to a slightly greater margin of victory in one of cueto's wins.

His recent trend covers half of the season. It's not just one bad performance. The outlier is his game 5 vs the Astros. Last night's game is who his is now.

there is always risk.  medlen and young are less risky than cueto.
