That's what I'm saying, that would make sense. However, Infante is signed on until 2019, so something is going to have to give soon.

Infante will be 37 in 2019. I thought we only had him through 2017, but we'll need a new 2nd baseman before 2019, whether we are still paying Infante or not.

Escobar will probably only be a Royal through 2017 if I had to guess.

I know, but the two team friendly options we have on him will get him through his age 30 season, and I doubt we want to spend too much on an aging, low OBP/SLG shortstop, who may command a pretty big contract.

I really am serious that a middle infielder backup is a need too though.

I'm guessing that we want Colon to play everyday for now, and plan on using him as the main utility guy from September on (assuming we don't pick anyone else up). So we're just using Dusty Coleman to warm the bench for him until then.

I think they really are trying to get him ABs, and barring acquisition of Zobrist, we'll see him back in a few weeks for the stretch run.

Escobar played 162 games last year and 158 the year before, so I don't think we have reason to be concerned about his durability.

they think he's below average at best defensively, and they think defense first for the middle infielders.  i'd guess they don't think he hits well enough for third.

great stats 8man.  shows that after price, you've got a lot of similar options.  i'd hate to see them overpay for cueto, if they can get a similar guy with a smaller name for significantly less.  the houston deal gives me hope.

The advantage to Cueto over Kazmir is that he throws a little over 1 extra inning per start. Innings eaters are great, but, for obvious reasons, it isn't as big a deal for the Royals as it would be for most teams.

yeah, to me that is meaningless for a guy whose only value will be pitching in 1-6 games this october.  if it was long-term deal maybe i'd care more.  don't get me wrong, i'd be very happy if they get cueto, i just don't want them to pay more for him than the comparable pitchers are going to cost.

the other thing with cueto are the injury rumors.  but i guess you just have to trust your doctors.

I'd like to see us get Mike Leake. He's been really good since the end of May and should be cheaper than Cueto.

does anyone else think that houston got a lefty instead of right-hander, knowing that if they make the playoffs, they're eventually going to have to come through kansas city to get to the ws?

Apparently Houston was trying to get Kazmir in the offseason, and he is from Houston so they probably think they have a better shot at re-signing him than most.

From the list 8man posted, I'd prefer going after Hamels.

That's a lot of guaranteed money for us to be taking on, considering the arbitration raises we are going to be paying soon, plus needing to resign/replace Gordon and Rios

It is, but with the sellout crowds, the record tv ratings, and a new tv deal around the corner, I think spending more makes a lot of sense for the Royals. They need somebody to replace Vargas next year, anyway. They could always trade him for prospects this offseason if they think putting Lamb into the rotation is a better option.

Yeah, the new TV deal may be a game changer. Similar to NBA right now, today's long term big contract may be tomorrow's bargain.

Sounds like Hamels is off the table from "people on the inside".

I would expect a free agent of similar quality to get signed for about $10 million more per season than Hamels currently gets paid. My concern is his age, but that's going to be a concern with any pitcher we would trade for that has more than a half season left on his contract.
