1) Sonny Gray is a great young pitcher. His base salary this year is about 500K. He isn't eligible for arbitration til 2017, and isn't a FA til 2020. There is no way Oak is gonna trade him. Now Kazmir could be traded, but he could be another rent a player. Free agent after this year, making 13M this year.

2) Shields is set to make 21M in each of the next 3 seasons. Then there is a team option for year 4. Shields can opt out after this year, but cant figure out why cause I don't think he is gonna get a better offer (long 5 year deal). I don't want Shields back

3) Feel terrible for Vargy. This guy was a very good pitcher for us the past 1.5 years.
Not counting last night, he had 38 starts for us.
13 of them his "In-game ERA" was 2.25 or lower. 8 more starts it was betewwen 2.25 and 3.00 ERA. So 21 of his starts were really good. Only 12 of them were not good (In-game ERA of 5.00 or higher)

since ventura is immediately coming back up, it's probable that none of the hypotheses for his demotion was terribly important in the decision making. bringing him right back up suggests it was primarily inventory control and spin for the media.

It was 100% inventory control. He and Duffy were the only two with options, Duffy just threw a gem, and Ventura threw a dud

Good question? I have no idea. I always look back to Meche who let us eat his contract when he couldn't stay healthy. He was well made tho and I don't think Vargas would do that.
