as many of you know, i like to break the long mlb season into two segments, an 86 game first "half" and a 76 game second "half". well, today the royals won the first segment, with a mark of 52-34, putting them in great shape to win the entire season with another win of the second segment.
checking in on how some of the royal's competitors have done with their segments, the tigers are 44-44, the twins are 49-40 and cleveland is 42-46. to put those numbers in perspective, if we project that the gordonless royals have a poor second segment, and play .500, going 38-38, that would put them at 90 wins. here are the records the other central teams would need to tie these hypothetically slumping royals:
detroit 46-28
minnesota 41-32
cleveland 48-26
it's good to remember these numbers when we see stories and rumors about possible trades over the rest of the month. because the value of any possible trade will be mostly confined to possibly improving the odds of advancing in the playoffs, this team doesn't need to add anything to win the division.
