You can definitely argue he's not the best, but you said "you don't think anyone still believes" he's the best. But a large percentage of baseball minds still believe he is with the way he evaluates talent, angles in amateur drafts, trades that build the systems, (farm and big league), free agent pick ups, etc.

Top 3 (to me) still currently in baseball are Beane, Dombrowski and Jocketty. Will hold off on Hoyer as I think he's a product of a combo/Epstein deal.

every outfield the royals have would have caught that.  except for rios.

no one scored, because the runner thought for sure rios would catch it.

Fair, but whatever.

What do you make of the sustained lack of top end success? Winning one playoff series over 17 years seems pretty damning for "the best", no matter the payroll restrictions.

Rios always looks like every day in RF is his first day.  It's like Yost asked someone to volunteer and Rios said "Sure, I've never played right before but how hard can it be?"

it worked (sorta) but yost shoulda pulled him before he got into that entire mess.  yeah, rios and cuthbert weren't helping, but he walked everyone and the balls that were hit were hit pretty well.  the royals were lucky to get out of that with three runs.

That's almost the whole story with Beane, tho. No one in baseball has been able to win like he has with those restrictions. The way he can keep winning (minus playoff success) with his talent evaluations in the draft, a mix of scouting and analytics, farm system, free agent signings, all because he can't keep a core of talent together due to those restrictions, is unreal.

It's funny, kind of sounds like we're talking about LHC Bill Snyder.

Yeah, walked in a run, then 2 SF.

Could have been worse, but definitely could have better. Got ahead of guys and then his fastball was all over the place.     Needed that big pitch to get a K or ground ball and didn't get it

Sys, to be fair, I think you believe no one would ever get a hit to RF if Orlando/Dyson was out there...lol

His team is in last place right now.

The numbers show they should be pretty damn decent actually (1st in AL in ERA, 4th in BA, 4th in Run Diff). They're just absolutely terrible defensively and dogshit out of the pen. And they have like a .300 win % in 1 run games. So he's got bunch of uncompetitive losers right now, that he'll have to weed out for being TC, FP, etc.

But, you're definitely right.

yeah, but i'm right in this case.  it was hit hard, but not far from him.  honestly it looked like he didn't really even try.  he just decided from the start that he'd play it off the wall.

salvy!

No clue why you would throw a fastball there.  He already smashed one foul, and was fouling off another one with a good cut.  Salvy licking his chops.

he probably didn't know that it's impossible to walk salvy.

His team has no leaders. It's the intangibles you can't put a number on that are holding them back. The Royals are in first because of intangibles like "having the most fun out there." Dayton Moore deserves credit for building this team. No other GM could have done it.

I agree, props to Moore. But also, the A's were the best team in baseball by a long shot at this time last year. It's a long season.

The funny thing, tho? I don't think HCBS is one of the best simply because he's never won the big one.  So thinking Beane is the best without having won a World Series is pretty damn silly, but I still do.
