I think Starling is a bust because I don't think you should use a top 5 pick to draft a project that is going to take 4 or 5 years to develop.

Alex Gordon disagrees.

Gordon was drafted in 2005 and made the MLB roster in 2007.

And was shitty for 4 more years on a shitty team and had his first truly productive season at age 27.  He was in the majors, but he was barely even a replacement level player.

Bubba Starling is a shitty AA player. He needs at least 3-4 more years of development to be a shitty major league player, if he ever makes it that far at all.

At which point he'll be the same age as Gordon when he was a shitty Major League player?

Why does that even matter? It's not like the Royals should be drafting players and expecting them to play their entire career in Kansas City. If they draft a player who doesn't even make the MLB Roster during the duration of his first contract, the pick is a bust.

We'll still have exclusive rights to him until his MLB service time is up :dunno:

Look, I don't love the Starling pick, but he has plenty of opportunity to still develop into a very good player for us. Just because we've seen a handful of guys dominate right away recently doesn't mean that is the norm, even for a top five pick.

I think a lot of people had written Gordon off before he had his breakout year, and then he followed that up with a pud year.

Billy Butler is probably the best first round pick the Royals have made over the past decade. I like Billy, and I've come around to liking Gordon, but it's very disheartening to see a franchise pick in the top 10 nearly every single year, only to end up with Billy and Alex being the stars, while other franchises end up with legitimate superstars.

Is JT really dumb enough to think screwing up a top 5 pick year after year after year isn't a big reason the franchise blows?

Hud keeps bragging about how he was drafted ahead of Cal Ripken Jr. It's so adorable.
