Who is going to be available in free agency? Anyone even close to as good as Shields?
Schurzer

shields is old.  if they're going to toss around crazy long, crazy big pitcher contracts, they should find a younger pitcher and offer it to him.

so we averaged 24,154 at the K this year, which is the highest since 1991 (26,686). what's next year's forecast look like? usually you get a bump in STH's after a good year right?

that free agent list was a little slim.   :frown:  but i still tentatively think they should let butler, aoki and shields go.  get a cheaper starter and a genuine bad ass dh (ideally one that could play on the field at third or of as well) and go defense in the of with dyson.

maybe melky?  not a lot of great names that jump off that list.  but also i hardly know any players that don't play for the royals.  maybe some of the names are good and i just don't know it.

I don't think the Royals are going to find a cheaper starter that could crack their rotation.

v. martinez doesn't fit the "can play on the field too" part, but it'd feel pretty good to take him away from detroit if he'd take a nice short little contract.

take shields and chen out and they only have four pitchers.  even if you pencil in zimmer and finnegan (which seems hugely optimistic), you still need at least one more guy.

anyone know how much santana will likely get this year?

Probably over $15m. Two effective seasons in a row and 4 out of 5 for a pitcher whose knock was inconsistency. He got $14.1 this year.

aoki is the better player.  there's no question about that.  but dyson is cheaper.  and he's gonna be here anyways.  save the money on a semi-redundancy and spend it on a better dh.  seems like a pretty easy decision to me.

if butler would be willing to take a really serious paycut, then i guess the decision-making gets more complicated.
