The beauty of the RPI - ours will be worse this year
« on: November 18, 2010, 10:20:43 AM »
Last year's RPI =  :emawkid:

Perception of this year's schedule =

Reality of this year's schedule (in terms of RPI) =  :jerk:

While we have a couple more elite level games this year (and really only Duke is for sure assuming we play them), on a whole our schedule is much worse in terms of having a quality RPI.  We will have a solid RPI just due to how good we're going to be, our conference schedule, and those elite games, but it's going to be knocked down considerably because of all the crap teams on the schedule.  Playing those 200+ rpi teams really drag you down.  Last year we really only had four teams that fit this mold (Loyola, Western Illinois, South Dakota & Ark Pine Bluff (and they actually finished at 183)). Teams like Boston, Cleve St & IUPUI were good mid RPI teams.  This year we have what will probably be seven poor RPI teams (Presb, TX Southern, Alcorn, Loyola, UMKC, N Fla, Sav St (don't know if Emp St counts)).   Hopefully James Madison ends up being middle tier.

Will be interesting to see how many of our fans complain about our RPI this year when there is such a perception that we have such a great schedule.  It won't matter for getting into the dance like it used to, but it may come into play for seeding.  This is the biggest weakness with the RPI.  You could play six teams and beat all six...one set by 20...the other by 40....you're still the same team either way...but your RPI plummets because of it.

We basically have the same non-con that KU plays every single year. No one ever cares about their RPI. Seeding teams 1-24 for the tourney is 100% eye-ball test.

For the record, this is not meant to be a complaint or a comparison.  Just for info and HRPIIQ discussion only.  I'm not concerned about our RPI hurting us.  To be honest my hope is to take a proactive approach to educating the LRPIIQ population of our fanbase (i.e.  :powerespect:) about how the RPI works so they're not bitching about it later this season.

RPI means nothing to me unless we are a bubble team.  IMO we will not be a bubble team.  Making this talking point useless to me.

When you are a good team, playing awful teams hurts more than playing good teams helps.  It's a lot closer to the 10s than it is to the 300s.
