If time travel were possible, EVER, it would destroy the timeline, because people are power-hungry and would "hot tub time machine" it and go back in time to make themselves rich.  Or we would have some crazy patriot come back in time to stop the WTC attacks.

Maybe not. Something about fixed points in time that cannot be changed.

Yeah. Michael Crichton talked about this in Timeline. And Michael Crichton pretty much knows everything.

And this discussion, my friends, is why the overarching plot of the Terminator series is Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).

Considering he's dead, I'd agree.

Not necessarily. Fixed points in time can be events or people. That's why Arnold couldn't kill John Connor. He's a fixed point in time.  Or something like that.

feh.
The correct answer, and only interesting point, is that those who have a clue will be going back to the late Cretaceous to watch dinosaurs.
Also, the time machine should be able to keep me alive for several million years back then.

Then just go back and kill his parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. See? Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).

His point in time was fixed. Therefore, his entire time line if fixed, including what led up to him being in existence. See? Not so hard.

Could be that timelines are fixed.  Like the timeline we are in will not change, but if someone goes back in time and changes something, THIS timeline stays the same, but the change creates a different timeline of events that happens after the change to infinity.  Different dimensions and stuff like that.  Probably has already been said in this thread, but I didn't read it if it was.

I would totally change history:

Hey Poland:  Modern Tanks, Start Training, Re-fIt your army, no horses, tank traps, anti-aircraft installations, modernize your air force, defense in depth . . .

Pres Lincoln:  Duck

JFK:  Put the Bubble on the car, speed up.

and on and on and on . . .

Going forward in time is the only answer here.

Being super lazy, I'd go sideways until I hit the timeline that was already the way that I wanted. That way, I wouldn't actually have to do any work.

Traveling back in time is an interesting topic. Neglecting the actual physical possibility or impossibility of time travel, it may actually do a pretty good job of governing itself from ever happening. For instance, suppose it is possible and there's a person with the capability of making a "time machine" or whatever and the audacity to go back with little disregard to what it does to the dimension that he's currently in. Well, if he goes back very far, there's a real possibility that he makes himself never exist ala butterfly effect. So, go back to the original time line when this certifiable genius got the idea of how to actually time travel. He then set in motion the events that would lead him to going back in time and thus ruining his chance at being born. So IN THAT TIME DIMENSION, he would simply go *poof* at the instant he thought about building the time machine. So in theory, there could have been many men that figured out time travel, or rather, would have figured out time travel but deleted their existence by deciding they were gonna do it.

Of course, this neglects the chicken or the egg argument giving you a perpetual loop in the time line which really only leaves the possibility of different dimensions. In short, if you're really smart and devious, it might be a good idea to never even consider creating a way to travel back in time.

Wow, I've actually had two people email me that video in the last couple days.

OK... let's assume they've figured out time travel in the future, and not only that but apparently precise, safe time travel, which would be infinitely more problematic than time travel itself. So they can send actual human beings through overlaps in space time, maybe in or around a black hole, and manage to keep them alive and not crushed down smaller than an atom and placed when they want them, and even trickier, where they want them.

Assuming they've figured this all out, i'm betting they're also not dumb and/or completely insane enough to travel BACK in time. And if they are, they would make sure somehow not to effect the timeline, which would be practically impossible. And they sure as hell wouldn't be walking down the street like assholes in front of movie sets and interacting with people and creating literally millions and billions of alternate time-lines stretching out into infinity and creating and erasing millions of future beings with every step they took. Anyone who travels back in time risks destroying their own timeline and everyone's they know.

If you assume that the time travelers have traveled back in time with the intent to change the timeline to prevent some future event, which would indeed be the only reasonable explanation for them being there, they still sure as hell wouldn't do it by strolling down the sidewalk dressed in drag looking like a freak.

So yeah, it's not a time traveler, you effing effs.

Yeah, like, let's say someone just went back to that Chaplin premiere "yesterday." If I already owned that DVD, that dude/chick clearly wouldn't have been in that scene because he/she hadn't gone back there "yet." So, when he/she did go back there "yesterday," would he/she suddenly appear in that scene on my DVD?

IT'S ALL TOO MUCH!!!!!!

You've just described a result of one of the many fundamental laws of physics that traveling back in time would violate. Two of the same being cannot possibly exist together at the same time. Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Traveling into the past fucks all that up.

Remember that time is as tangible and measurable a force as gravity or any other force in our universe. The universe is constantly expanding, causing what we feel as the advancement of time. But time only moves in that one direction, what we know as forwards, not backwards.

It's easier to think of traveling BACK in time as what it actually would be; traveling to a difference LOCATION in time. Even if you fly through a wormhole to a different LOCATION in space time, say ten years before you were born, your future self would still exist, just in another spot in space-time, but in the same universe all the same. An impossibility.

Then again, I wrote an entire thesis on this kind of stuff for a physics graduate class when I was in CO.... and if I learned anything it's that quantum physics, while brilliant in many ways, still has trouble explaining many so-called "impossibilities" that ended up being possible all the same.

What if Time Travel was more like "A Christmas Carol"? You could travel in time, but you lacked any physicality, and therefor all you could do was observe.  You could not be observed or influence the time line in anyway, either on purpose or on accident.
