did you know that both the "l" and "r" sounds are not part of the japanese phonetic alphabet. people who grew up surrounded by nothing but japanese never hear those sounds and loose their ability to distinguish between the two as they are actually two very similar sounds. example- you could say the words "lap" and "rap" or "lip" and "rip" and someone that was raised with nothing but japanese being spoken around them would not be able to tell the difference between the words. they would think that you were just saying the same word twice.

furthermore, did you know that sounds like b/p, g/k, v/f are the exact same sounds produced the exact same way with the only difference being the onset of voicing (amount of time between release of air and vibration of vocal folds)? i mean, wow huh? great thread topic OP.

this thread has gotten way off of its intended course.  my family moved to the US from Japan when I was 10 years old and i love my home country of japan.
