Last year against Nebraska... and cas4ksu's thoughts
« on: October 06, 2010, 12:36:13 PM »
You know, we really had a pretty good chance to win that one.

Valentine's fumble on the 1. Cherry missing two (2) FG's.

I mean Nebraska is totally different on offense with Martinez instead of Lee at QB; but last year Lee completed about 60% of his passes, well Martinez is on the same pace.

So the big upgrade is with Martinez's speed, but in terms of balance, Nebraska is about in the same spot as last year.

Defensively, no where near as good as last year. Thomas ran for 99 against them last year, I would expect nothing less.

Obviously, getting off to a quick start is key. But this is a game where if either team gets up 14, because of the other team's limited passing game, it would be a tough hole to climb out of.

But who knows, should be a fun game. Go Cats.

This may be the biggest of them all. We haven't really had a big ST play, so we are due for one.

With their secondary I'd almost want limited Carson with only short passes sparsely attempted.  Otherwise, we aren't + on the TO margin.

True, but I'm banking on a few downfield attempts.  At some point we will have to play action NU and look vertical.  Doesn't have to be very much, maybe 3-4, and even one 40 yard completion would loosen things up a bunch.

Neither team is very equipped to make much of a comeback of any kind (UCF doesn't count). So whichever team gets up by two scores probably has it wrapped up.

it is almost impossible for coffman to do worse than gregory did last year. 15 completions sounds insane though.

This is based on some assumptions:

1. We are running the ball effectively

2. We are running the ball effectively

That said, Nebraska would cheat up some safeties on occasion to aide in stopping the run. If they EVER show either Cover 1 or Cover 0 ( :crossfingers: ) We will have to take shots down field. And at that point it would be simply be a gamble, but we will have to gamble to win this game. So we take that man coverage, toss it up and hope our receivers when those 50/50 balls or knock them down.

IIRC two punts by Henery inside the 5 were huge  :curse:

With their CB's having a great season so far, do you guys think we'll see more TE action? Or do you think we'll force it to the WR's?

Whichever keeps Queso from thinking he can throw it over a linebacker.

I think that we will just hand the ball of to Daniel Thomas. If they can bottle him up while still keeping the safeties deep, I think we will lose. If they have to bring up their safeties, we should be able to get some open looks down field.

Is anyone concerned that their secondary success might be a little bit bloated considering the lack of quality opponents? I hate that argument, because players/teams can get complacent and WHOLY crap this defense can be many things, but complacent sure as eff ISN'T one.

He was talking about the Nebraska secondary, and they are very good. Still, if their safeties are walked up into the box, our receivers should be able to beat their corners deep. Coffman would just have to hit them in stride, which hasn't happened much.

Our secondary is not as good as the stats, but this has nothing to do with the level of our competition. We have played one of the more challenging schedules in the country up to this point. Our secondary is overrated because teams have found so much success against us on the ground that they really have not needed to air the ball out much.

I think the Nebraska defense will scheme somewhat similar to how OU (Bo Pelini was defensive coordinator) schemed Darren Sproles in 2004. Dylan Meier had a lot of success in the short passing game, and Snyder used Sproles mainly as a decoy the whole game. I think 2004 OU had much more talent, both offensive and defensive than 2010 NU does, but I would be somewhat surprised if the result ends up being much different.

*It was 31-21, btw, which matches both the over/under and original spread set by Vegas.

I hate to even suggest this but I think we need Queso to throw some balls deep and let our receivers make a play.  We absolutely have to give our gifted wr's a chance to catch the ball, even if this means throwing it up for grabs.  If it's intercepted, that's really on the wr...where Queso can kill us is throwing the ball on a line directly to a defender who has nothing but green to the end zone (ie: the ISU int).  An intercepted deep ball isn't the worst thing that can happen and it should put some pressure on the NU secondary.  We just can't pound the ball the entire game.  Am I alone in thinking our wr's are good enough to go up and catch a 50/50 ball?

I do not want to see any 50/50 balls thrown unless we are down late in the game. I don't think Nebraska will have much success stopping the run unless they bring up the safeties. This will either make their corners give a big cushion, opening up easy short passes, or it will leave receivers open deep down field.
