Get over your Carolina obsession. Why don't you marry it or something.

In some ways it is a dump.   But they just re-did almost the entirety of downtown, new boardwalk along the river, new convention center . . . for being "a dump" we sure do get lots of visitors.  UNCW had to raise their admission standards because they were getting so many applicants.    I like and miss KC . . . but in a lot of ways, it's a dump as well, unless you stay out in white bread country all the time.

But my post really wasn't about Wilmington itself.

Charleston is nice . . . if you stay in the downtown area or some the white bread island areas and burbs . . . venture too far off the beaten path downtown, and you're in a hell hole.   Some of the worst poverty and blight I've ever seen.

I just went there to nail some gal who played for the CoC soccer team.  Didn't go looking for the ghetto.

Will be in Columbia, SC in two weeks. Good town? Yes/no? Things to do? I've heard it's kind of a shithole

I've only been there a couple of times . . . there's a bar district downtown right by campus, Five Points, that's pretty cool.   Otherwise it is kind of a crappy town . . . USC's stadium is in an industrial park by the fair grounds, albeit they were going to clear a bunch of that out to build a new sports park . . . don't know if they did that or not.   There's a lake on the outskirts of town where all the New Englanders and New Yorkers who sold their 1000 square foot houses for $800K built their McMansions, that's a pretty nice area.

Guarantee Charleston is like Baton Rouge and Gainsville and some other crappy SEC towns: horribly boring and sketchy outside of football.  Baton Rouge: The city that never wakes.  Baton Rouge: Topeka without all the excitement.

I knew a guy who moved to Wilmington, he loved it. It's actually one of the more sought after locations if you work for the Corp of Egineers. Take that little factoid FWIW :dunno:

There's nothing about Charleston that says Topeka or Baton Rouge.

Fatty, I hear good things about Davidson, that whole area of the Charlotte Metroplex has grown like crazy, and you're close to Lake Norman which is nice with a lot of wealthy people living on it.   Plenty of neck types though, and lots of transplants which in many cases is a good thing.    I pay attention to the planning, because a lot of southern cities have sucked at Urban planning and not kept up with the growth.   That area seems like it has done a good job.

Not working Clams .  .  . just not working.

are you trying to say that Wilmington isn't swarming with NC's version of Riley rats? wow, I've seen it all, have you been hanging out in Tardville with the Squawks?

It's not swarming with Marines . . . it's 60 miles from Wilmington to Jacksonville, it's not like Junctown/Ft. Riley and Manhattan.   I go downtown all the time, you may find a few Marines here and there at times, but not many.   It's nothing like the problems that have on the Plaza or in Westport at times.  College kids, surf punks and actor wannabes . . . Willimiwood, home of the 3rd most TV and Movie Productions in the United States next to L.A. and NY.

maybe i hung out in the hood of wilmington the couple times i went down there or something.  seemed like a place where all the former marines went to settle after getting released.

Note: i'm a northeasterner and haven't spent much time in the south, I may have incorrectly attributed everyone with southern (poor) english as being past/present military.

This thread was really about the schools and their student population make up, it wasn't about the towns themselves.   Lots of things about this place completely blow, and lots of things are really nice.

Most of the former military types around here are college educated, or the types who went into the military to get money for college or technical training, not the hardcore Jarheads.   That element has been diluted.    If Wilmington were closer to Jacksonville it would be a different story I am sure.    High influx of engineering types at Corning and G.E. Nuclear and lots of people in pharmaceutical related businesses.
