This Year Home Is Coming To Me When Nebraska Plays Kansas State
By Jay Urban(Correspondent) on October 5, 2010

2008 was a great year for me.  Despite spending four years of college in the state of Michigan where I was only able to attend two Nebraska games (Thanksgiving Tilts with Colorado in Lincoln), and one year of military life, I was pleased to be stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas, finding a welcome home in Manhattan, Kansas.  Even though I was behind enemy lines in purple territory, it was great to be only two hours from Lincoln.  I visited Memorial Stadium twice that 2008 season, the home opener against Western Michigan and an October stomping at the hands of Missouri, besides getting to pick up the game here in Manhattan against Kansas State University.

These three experiences of Husker Football were all I had for over one year, as I spent the entire 2009 season living and dying in the middle of the night in front of an AFN television in the cafeteria of an abandoned warehouse in the middle of Iraq.  I arrived home just in time to get to the 2010 opener against Western Kentucky and have been looking forward to the Husker return to Manhattan since the middle of the summer.

The one thing that I haven’t been looking forward to, is dealing with the rage of Kansas State fans at the reality of visiting fans.  I’m sorry, not everyone is as easily cowed as the Central Florida contingent that I saw you harassing last weekend.   Half of an hour researching the topic clearly portrays that Wildcat fans are not the best, or the worst in the Big 12, so maybe it is something that you hold uniquely for the Sea of Red driving past Tuttle Creek Reservoir, down Kimball, and into LHC Bill Snyder Family Stadium.  If so, I just can’t understand it.  I’ve been present for three Cornhusker losses in Lincoln, two of them outstanding beat-downs by the visitors and in none of these cases were fans openly taunted or maligned.  They certainly were resented as they whooped it up for their team, the older fans may have turned and silently cussed their neighbors from another state, but they certainly didn’t let try to ruin their evening on account of something that didn’t happen on the field.

As a part of this, I would like to say that this article, is in no way, intended to be an invective against the city that I call home, Manhattan, which really is an enjoyable place to live and I regularly try to take advantage and appreciate the great things that this city has to offer.  Manhattan compares positively in almost every way to my own, similarly sized hometown in Nebraska.  Despite this, I simply cannot stand by, especially in this week before my own Nebraska Cornhuskers come to the LHC Bill Snyder Family Stadium, and not bring attention to this issue, and challenge the Big Red Nation to live up to the standards that we have set for ourselves.

I can’t really put my finger on one singular reason that I fear a return to the home of the “fans that aren’t the loudest but talk a lot of trash” which greeted me in 2008, but there are some weird things going on in with the fans of this K-State football team.  I think it starts with the elevated expectations of the fans after a 4-0 start.  All of the K-State sports personalities all say the right things when talking about this game.  They respect the Huskers and are sorry to see the end of this rivalry, but they also take every chance they can get to slide in a lot of talk about how they believe that the Wildcats are somehow more deserving of a win here, to talk up LHC Bill Snyder.  It’s getting a little old constantly hearing about LHC Bill Snyder is one of the top five coaches of all time from oscar Steinbrock’s show on 580 WIBW and his ability to view film getting credit for Kansas State’s running game from Stan Weber while being interviewed by Soren Petro on 810 WHB.  He’s good, undoubtedly.  He’s very good, but he’s not Tom Osborne.  Last time I checked, Tom Osborne had won three National Championships and thirteen Conference Championships.  LHC Bill Snyder has one conference championship, 2003, when his team finished 11-4 and upset Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship.   I’m afraid that I feel that the higher that the expectations of Wildcat fans are here, the more antagonistic the experience is going to be.  LHC Bill Snyder has already declared that he will not tolerate seeing the color red in the Vanier Sports Complex on the north side of the stadium.  I’ve noticed the piece of plywood propped up against a tree along Bluemont spray-painted “beat nebraska”.

I think it also has something to do with the historical significance of this final game against the Huskers as a conference opponent.  Both of the Kansas schools in the Big 12 felt slighted after being completely left out of the Big 10 expansion talk, and forcing administrators to talk publicly and make judgments about standards regarding academics, facilities, and fan bases is always going to leave someone feeling slighted.  In this case, we’re pitting the winner against the loser, and a lot of people around here think that Nebraska got a deal that was a little too sweet as a “too big to fail” kind of charity case which does nothing but increase contempt.

The final reason is that I think this group gets a little nasty toward what they perceive as their little brother role against their primary rival.  I don’t think that anyone in Nebraska has hatred for the Wildcats.  We have had some great competition in the past.  The reality now, is that the Huskers have won the last five in a row.  In the long run, this isn’t a rivalry we are going to really miss in the move to the Big Ten.  From our perspective, it’s also worth noting that his teams haven’t made it to a bowl game in his last three seasons.  I understand that he took over one of the worst programs in America and turned them into winners, but one bowl game in the past 6 years (not all coached by Snyder) shows me that the program wasn’t exactly built as solidly as most Cat Backers think it was.  To a Nebraska fan, this is going to be a really tough game.  Although I picked a big Nebraska win, there is absolutely no doubt that the Wildcats possess enough talent and coaching to defeat the Big Red on their home field.

So to all Nebraska fans, let’s represent the Big Red with some class in Manhattan this weekend.   Let’s come early, take some time to eat in Aggieville (Pat’s Blue Ribbon BBQ is my preference), be loud, and stay late.  Most of all, let’s cheer on the Huskers the way that we know best, being an extremely loud and extremely positive force behind our Huskers.  I would love for this weekend to be my homecoming from Iraq, bringing the best of “The Good Life” down to Kansas on a Thursday night.

If you want to tailgate, come and find me in the Ag Science lot northeast of the stadium, right across Kimball from the parking lot east of the stadium.  I’ll be waving my Nebraska flag.

Phuck that guy.  He just wrote a rough ridin' essay and used every reason in the book why the good people of Manhattan hate both Nebrasska fans and the fvckin' tools from Fort Riley...

I agree that had his worthless ass gotten shot in Iran or Iraq or wherever he was a waste of life over there, we'd have never been subjected to that waste of time.

A Fact of Life:  Any team that beats cornhole their fans automatically become the "worst fans in college football history".

This has been a fact of life moment.
