Plano and Addison are both pretty darn close and have tons of places to booze.  I've never actually stopped in Denton, so I'm not sure what they have to offer.

Plano sucks.  Don't come at me w/ any sort of Sambuca suggestion either...b/c that place, and that area is dogcrap.  Addison is cool, but if you go there, you might as well drive 10 more minutes down the DNT and hit Highland Park & Uptown areas in Dallas

Is there a reasonable Denton TX bar district or is it off to Dallas?

Very nice bar district in Denton although it's geared more towards music than sports.  Check out Dan's Silverleaf, The Boiler Room, Andy's Basement.  Although UNT is not known for it's football, it's music program is top notch and bleeds over into the community.  Midlake got it's start here.
