Good Podcasts to listen to?
« on: September 29, 2010, 01:51:50 PM »
What podcasts do you guys listen to?

I've been listening to-

Radiolab- This is a pretty interesting podcasts from NPR. They have a few segments on one subject per podcast. A really good one.

Jay and Silent Bob Get Old- Still pretty new, but it's good if you're into their humor. So far, it's mainly about Jason's drug issues.

We're Alive- It's like an old timey radio broadcast, but it's done really well. Focuses on a group of people after a zombie outbreak. I'm in love with it.

Anything and everything. Some of my favorites-

Numbers- looks at a few different really crazy things people found.
Words- It looks at how important language is to not only our every day life, but our intelligence. This is actually really thought provoking. Just ponder this- how would we think without words?
War of the Worlds- It talks about the original radio broadcast and the power of mass media. You think no way people would fall for the radio broadcast in this day and age, but they provide some crazy stories proving otherwise.

There is one on NPR's "This American Life" which breaks down the housing crisis (from a couple of months ago)... your jaw will be on the floor at the conclusion - and I found myself just shaking my head in disbelief. I would menton some of the stuff that they talk about, but the WOW factor has to be experienced to appreciate. PM me with your thouhts.

Oh, and FWIW - my commute just isn't the same without NPR... pure genius.

You're gonna have to link me to it. Sounds interesting.

Chings- Is his podcast interesting and informative, or interesting and really dry?

I really like it.  It has hugely varied topics and the line of questioning is not your usual fluff.

That boggles my mind and just ticks me off. I figured it was close to that, but I had no idea it was that massive.

Yea, I really like TAL stuff.  There is a great one about a guy trying to become a bounty hunter.  Think I listened to it on the way back from OKC for the tourny so I would expect it aired (or reaired) in March sometime.

Another great one on the financial crisis had to do with a team going in to take over a bank.

Agreed on TAL. Wonderful.

Some comedy podcasts I enjoy:
Comedy Death Ray - hosted by Scott Aukerman of Mr. Show fame.
Sklarbro Country - hosted by comedians the Sklar brothers. Talk about sports/pop culture.
Pod F. Tompkast - hosted by comedian Paul F. Tompkins, also from Mr. Show. Various bits, sketches and impressions.

The Morning Jones with Bomani Jones is the best sports talk show in America.  If you don't like NSFW language or negro's talking (there once was a GPC thread complaining about the Sporting News Radio 2 Live Stews and their dialect that couldn't be understood) don't bother.  The dude is smart and incredibly rough ridin' entertaining.

Here's his hilarious take on Turner Gill if you want just the Gill take skip to 23:30

And more on Gill's hatred of poon

This list covers my basics:

  • This American Life
  • Radiolab
  • Stuff You Should Know
  • The Moth
  • Car Talk

Can't believe nobody had mentioned "Stuff You Should Know" yet - topics range from "How Corporate Personhood Works" to "Why do people blush".  Shows are usually 25-45 minutes, and can be pretty damn funny (wouldn't work without the two hosts).
