« on: September 20, 2010, 09:12:51 PM »
I just picked up a plasma tv and have never owned one before.  I've been told that I need to break it in?  mods?

Play a game with a static HUD for a really long time and see if the image gets burned in.

"Burn in" is generally considered a thing of the past.  Image retention does happen but it is temporary.  I was careful for the first 100 hours not to pause it on something for too long but I don't think it would have done anything.  A couple months after I got it I fell asleep watching a DVD and the title screen was up for hours.  It caused some image retention but was gone after viewing something else for a few minutes.  You absolutely do not need to use one of those special "break in" DVD's or whatever they are.

You are seasoning the phosphors in a plasma tv.   Go to this site http://www.avsforum.com/ and find the forum for your specific TV, they will give you the "inside info" on how to season your television, usually they have a set of pictures that do the trick that you put on an SD card.
Where did you get that overnight bag?

I read about 20 pages of the 100 page thread on my new television earlier today but I guess I'll head back over there.

33, what kind of tv do you have?

Pretty sure the Geek Squad will come take care of (read damage beyond repair) for the low price of $1,000. (Monster cables not included)

Do NOT watch it with the black bars on the sides.   You need to put it in "stretch" mode when it's not HD.  Otherwise, you will burn in the black bars on the sides.

Plasmas have the best picture, but burn in the easiest.

I never treated mine any differently than any other TV and haven't had any issues.  Supposedly, problems that affected older plasma TVs have been dealt with through "technology."

reading that avsforums thread, they say you should run it for 100 hours straight with nothign but these colored slides/slideshow running before watching it to break it in and season the phosphors like saul said.

sounds like a major pain in the ace.

wondering if i should have gotten the LED.

Hope you are putting it into a dark room?!  :ohno:
not real dark, not real light either.  the panasonic plasmas have a matte finish on the screen, all should be fine.

Or you could completely not do that and everything will be perfectly fine.   :dunno:

I did the burn in thing on my Pioneer a couple of years ago when I got it.  Don't know if I needed to or not, but it was pretty easy so I figured I wouldn't chance it.  :dunno:

Since then I've watched hours upon hours of TV with black bars on the sides, or a static crawl on the bottom, and only very rarely (like once or twice) have I seen any IR, and that's gone away in a hurry when watching something else.

I have an LG plasma and the first thing I watched on the TV was March Madness.  I've never had a single problem with it.  Ever.

:users: = only an LG plasma

Did you buy the most expensive brand with the largest hz rating, because if not my friend your tv will probably blow up in a month or two.
