Cherish him, folks. Cherish him.
John Currie visited the handicapped section at halftime
I took my parents to the game Sat. They are in their late 80's and my dad is in a wheelchair. They are both avid KSU fans but only get to one game each year. Its a lot of work getting them in/out of games. So we're sitting there at the top row above section 3 watching halftime when I hear someone say "So, how's everyone enjoying the game?" I turn around and it's John Currie. He goes along the line of about 20 folks sitting there, half in wheel chairs, and introduces himself. Many of the folks there don't know who he is. He would always say "Hi, I'm John Currie, are you enjoying yourself?" The other person (all of them elderly) would say something like "who are you?" Currie "I'm the Athletic Director at K-State". Senior citizen "Oh, I thought you looked kind of familiar". Currie "Well they air brush those photos so I'm not really that good looking. This is how I really look. Are you enjoying yourself?" Senior citizen "Why are you up here talking to us?" Currie " This is my favorite part of the job, meeting great people like you!" He hung around and talked for 15 minutes to each person up there and then before he left he stopped by each person again and thanked them for coming to the game. My dad's final comment to me after Currie left (dad's 87 and not quite as sharp as he used to be). "Is he a Congressman or a Senator". Me to dad "No, he's the AD here". Dad's reply "Seems like a really nice guy...and he sure is young. Sure was friendly". We got back to the car and I showed dad the parking receipt with Curries picture on it to prove he was the AD and the guy he met. It was a very fun evening and a good memory. Perfect evening to take them.
