I need a suit
« on: September 06, 2010, 11:33:24 PM »
What type of suit would Justin Timberlake wear to pick up Lady Gaga on their first date?

I'm leaning towards a navy hue with out any type of shine. 2 buttons or 3? My size is 41R. Give me some tips on how to look cool. Where should I suit shop in KC or Topeka? I need it by October 1st.

Charcoal with a pinstripe is much more versatile than navy. It's dark enough for formal occasions like funerals, but you can still wear suave shirts with it when attending weddings :drunkbridesmaids:

Pinstripes are earned.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Some other tidbits:

- i'm wearing it up at the alter for my wedding. non-traditional outdoor wedding. she's wearing a faint pink dress.
- pleated pants or flat front? how long until the flats are uncool? pleated make me look all Manginoey.
- what color of shoes go best with navy suits?
- what color of dress shirt and tie?

OMG sooo many questions remain unanswered.

Wow.  You are really not giving us much to work with here.  The single thing you know is that your suit is probably going to be navy?

Go to the store with a camera phone that you can post pics with during a relatively high-traffic time on the boards when no sports stuff is going on, and I'm sure the elites here can guide you through it.

You can also hire BSAC to consult you in person on this project for $500/hour plus expenses.

I recommend you go to Halls and let the people in their suit department find a suit for you.   They know what they're doing, you don't.

for a navy suit, go 2 button with flat front pants (something that classic never goes out of style).  please, whatever you do, get the suit tailored.  and go a little bit skinny on the fit unless you're a big dude.  wear with some brown shoes for extra panache.

I'm a thin guy. It seems with skinny guy coats, they put the vent seem on the two sides instead of just one on the back bottom of the coat. I don't want this.

Has anybody been suit shopping at Dillards in Manhattan lately. There's a semi-hot asian lady who annoys the crap out of me because of her omni-presence. She's everywhere and won't leave me alone.

-if you are getting married outdoors somewhere warm/tropical go with a tan linen suit
-flat front, always will be cool.  Pleats make everyone look terrible outside of AC Slater and Brent Venzy.
-would have to see the suit first

that said, clams' point about going to a good suit place and having them suit you is the best advice

So, is JoS A. Banks a "good" suit store? What about Burlington Coat Factory? I love the guys voice on the JoS A Banks commercials, but I don't think his suit's are the best quality. Where, in the driving vicinity of Manhattan can I go to find a decent suit? Borck Brothers with Allan Parker?

Not sure about Jos A Banks, never shopped there.  You asked for a suit place in KC and I gave you the best one.  Brooks Brothers is another option.

Again, you really just need to go somewhere that doesn't sell junky feces and trust the people helping you.  It's your wedding and you'll own the suit the rest of your life, don't go looking for bargains just to save a few bucks and end up looking like a Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!)...  Every man needs to have at least one really nice suit.

if its casual and you are skinny enough one-button is an option. however they are trendy at the moment and probably won't be around for a very long time.

if you go navy or gray you have the option to wear black or brown. however, brown, imo, is the way to go. something along the lines of

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3123841?origin=category&resultback=1782

matching belt is needed.

flat front is not a trend. they are just hot right now. you really only have two or three options with pant fronts in the first place, so they all will be present in the fashion world.

you could also go with a skinny tie. however it depends on the cut of your suit. most two and single-buttons would work though.

there is so much more that can go to this question, but i'm lazy and don't feel like doing it. different makes and wool will play a tremendous role in your suits life. i'm not saying you shouldn't be spending close to a grand on a suit, but you definitely should not be afraid to if the suit is going to be made well and will last a lifetime.

Jos A Banks is fine, Brooks Brothers is better.  And also, pinstripes are most certainly earned, not just picked out, as a poster pointed out earlier.

pinstripes are most certainly not earned. neither are double breasted suits. if it looks good and you want to carry it, do it.

I think the most important question is:  Have you guys already booked the Phish cover band for the reception?

I don't know if you are mocking me or not with that question, but I don't like you. If you eff up this wedding deal for me with some bad advice, I'll rough ridin' ruin you.

That said, I'd love a Phish cover bad for the reception.

Yeah, FWIW, I've had jobs that caused me to buy a few suits.  I like SD's tan linen suit idea for the wedding, but you'll get more use out of the navy suit over time.  Go flat front, 2 button, IMO.  No suit ever stays at the forefront of fashion, and pleats will return eventually, but this is still the better option now and probably more "timeless."  What the suit is made from -- wool or cotton -- also gives you different looks.  It pays to talk to a knowledgeable salesperson.  And it'll need to be tailored to fit properly.

I've actually purchased suits from both Brooks Brothers and Jos A Banks, and I think the quality is pretty much the same, although it will definitely impress more people if your suit is Brooks Bros.

Shoe color?  Make sure the shoes match the belt, but with a navy suit you could go black (more formal) or caramel brown, depending on the wedding:

And make sure the future wife signs off on your tie color; they tend to think that's an important detail.  That's all I got.

Clams, I am sure you know more about suits than I, but I don't think that Lefty is in need of the quality that you would find at Halls or Brooks Bros.  If this is only going to be an item that he wears on rare occaisions I would recommend getting a lower cost suit and having it tailored.  There is no need to purchase a more durable and expensive variety.

Also Navy seems odd to me, especially when paired with pink in a warm weather setting.

Need to know more about the wedding setting.

The dude on the left is wearing something that would work well for a warm weather, outdoor wedding.
