“Oh, hey Chris. Things are alright. I’ve been thinking a lot lately.”
Chris sits down next to Arthur with a plate of grilled chicken, rice and pineapple...
“Yeah? Is there anything I can help you with?
“Well, do you think we should even be doing this? Should we be occupying so much of our time playing football? Is there really anything to gain?"
“That’s a good question and I don’t know if I can give you a definitive answer...”
“I know it’s a lot to spring on you at this moment... We’ve known each other for so long...”
Arthur takes a sip of lemonade from a plastic cup, glistening with condensation...both aloofly study the table’s centerpiece, a translucent wildcat, it’s 6:23pm...
“I saw this movie once and there was this young man in it; he was English or Irish perhaps. Anyway, he was an Olympic athlete and he said that when he ran, he “felt God’s pleasure”. I’ve always remembered that. It seemed like a good way to view athletics. We can enjoy things that we do, knowing that God created in us the desire for joy and that when we’re experiencing joy, He is too.”
“That's true. I hadn't thought of it exactly like that. That helps a lot Chris, thank you very much.”
“I’m glad. You’re welcome.”
“Tomorrow will be fun.”
“Yes. It will be fun.”
...
“This chicken is really seasoned well.”
“Yeah, it’s really good. We’ll need to stop by and thank Judy and Meredith for preparing it.”
...
“Can I have a ride home tonight?”
“Sure.”
