Also, there's no way Tay is a better player than Russell.

A) no duh
B) they play different positions
C) shut up before you say something stupid like Russell is a PG

Wasn't he recruited as a PG?

that's what his bio said

Ben's lineup would be okay for certain matchups but I don't think Kelly is big enough at C.  Move him over to the 4, with Spri at the 5.

There's really no need for a true center in the modern age of college basketball.  Samuels presents matchup problems at the 4 because of his ability to score from the perimeter, and Kelly is just a beast down low in the post.  I kind of see Asprilla being a better, more skilled version of Colon next year.

I'm already sick of the Colon comparo only because just about anyone not named Colon is a better more skilled version of Colon.  I did love me some Colon though (that's what she said).

I personally like to think of Spri as a larger, less talented version of LeBron.  :dunno:

I don't Russell will take many minutes from Pullen, Tay, Sprads, and Maple Leaf at the 1.  Thinking that his best opportunity for mins would be at the 2.

Spri (from what I've heard) sounds like Dexter Pittman.....big wide body with a good hook shot and good post moves

I don't think Maple Leaf Canadian Bacon (I like this better) will get any more minutes at the 1 than Nick. He's not highly touted. He's probably good enough to get garbage time at the 1 and that's it. I hope he proves me wrong.

There have been several "reports" from various places that have said the coaching staff a) really likes Nick as a player, but he needed to "mature" (which is why he didn't play as much last year as Tay) and b) he will likely play a different role than they originally recruited him for.  It sounds like they thought he would develop into a PG focus combo guard, but his skill set as he matures looks like it will be more of a SG focus.

I think the thought is that Irving is probably more of the PG focus of the combo spot from the guards in that class.  Then it appears that Sprads is the PG focus of the next class and the Canadian is just to provide PG focus depth.

I think the hope for this year at this point is for Pullen to take the PG spot and then competition for back-up between Irving, Sprads, and Canada.  Then McGruder at the SG spot (with some time at the SF depending on match-ups, etc.) with Russell and perhaps Sprads providing depth.  But we could see any combination of guards out there, as long as there is someone there that the staff trusts as the primary ball handler at one of the two combo guard spots.  And then maybe even some 3 guard line-ups for smaller teams if the staff builds enough trust that 3 of those guys together can be effective.

If we go with a lineup of Tay, Pullen, Jamar, CK, and Spri there are four legit scoring options and very good defensive team. Tay would have to prove he can control the offense and improve his handle, which wasn't great last year. And I'd worry a bit about another Dom situation in which defenders can sluff down and pack in the post/trap Pull. Aside from the occasional step back three, Tay doesn't have much of an offensive arsenal. Maybe with a season under his belt he can actually make a layup. I have faith. But mostly I see this as a "Colon lineup" that starts most games but Frank gets the team going by quickly taking Tay out and replacing with Rod or (needs to be much improved) Nick.

This team really has fantastic depth. As everyone has said, the key is for a couple guards to step up and provide options depending on whether Cob plays 1 or the 2, which will depend on the opponent. I believe Rod is going to be very good and can start at the 2 this year. Regardless of the matchup, Frank is going to want to give Jake, the figurehead of the rebirth of KSU basketball, minutes at point that he desperately wants to show he can be an NBA player. How long Frank gives him the chance, who knows, but that means someone else is going to get some extended minutes at the 2. That should be Rod, but may be Nick. I can't see Tay playing that role.

Jamar isn't perfectly suited for the 3 but I think that's where he's going to play mostly. Wally should exclusively play the 4. He will foul out quickly at the 5. Spri may need half a season to get used to Big 12 caliber play. CK is likely going to need to shift to the 5 when Spri struggles. There just aren't enough minutes for Jamar, Wally, CK, and Spri to split those two spots. They're too valuable and Jamar is the most obvious one who can be utilized elsewhere and has before. And I do think JHR will see some minutes. I liked a lot of what I saw out of him last year although I know there are some haters. Rod can also play some 3 in the Tay/Sprads, Cob/Nick set with Nino/Southie providing small forward depth. One or both of the freshmen will need to log good minutes. I think both are more than capable. The unexpected buzz about Shane over the summer has me feeling pretty good about the latest NY addition.

I don't get the 3 guard sets suggestion. It doesn't really make sense. There's no reason to have Tay and Rod playing at the expense of one of Jamar, CK, and Spri, unless Spri turns out to suck.

Holy shazbot! this season is going to be awesome.  :bball: But it's so far away....

Thanks for the analysis, B&C. It pretty well mirrors what I've been thinking. I can't wait for the new season, and to see what the new guys can do, and to see how our 2nd-year players have developed over the summer. Hell, to see how everyone's developed. God damn, it's gonna  be fun.

I believe it's this thread that Underdog Wildcat wanted bumped.

Does anyone have any new information that might contribute to a refined minutes breakdown? Only thing I've heard that might change my original post is that Myles might be better than some of us thought.

I "got in the game" today listening to Woalters terrible radio show on my commute home and Undy was on.  They talked about tailgating and the football game, so outside of some meaningless comments about depth and getting pumped for late night, its hard for me to really provide any updated information.

Thank Matt Wolters being a mouth breathing moron.

Chatted with a person very close to the basketball program. This is what he had to say. Starting line-up will most likely go as followed:

PG – Pullen (Said Jake will definitely be a PG first this year).
SG – Irving (Surprised me when he said that Martavious was going to get the start over Russell but sounds like MI has been working really hard this off-season).
SF – McGruder (Said Jam-Sam will likely come off the bench again just to get that extra surge).
PF – Judge (Said Wally is the most improved player over the off-season, if you went to Midnight Madness you could definitely see that).
C – Kelly (Going with a more athletic line-up with Judge & Kelly).

“Then you have Russell, Samuels, & Asprilla coming off the bench with all of that energy.

I really like Myles. Hope he can adjust quickly to the Big XII.

I don't about playing Irving at the 2. Don't see enough of an offensive game to put him there unless they think he is a good enough of a shooter to rely on backdoor screens to get him open from the corner. Or roll him off the same screens to get a mid-range shot.

Any HBBIQ guys have a good idea of how Pullen's minutes were split last year between the 1 and 2 spots?

IMO this season is totally dependent upon finding the right person to run the point with Jake off the ball

It really didn't go down like "okay you are the one here, you are the one there," so no.  What people keep forgetting is that Frank likes to have more than one ball handler on the court, an option 1A 1B.  People who are looking for a point guard or a shooting guard really need to be looking for a guy who Frank trusts with the ball and who will defend.  Who that is, who Tue hell knows, none of us have been at practice?  Rumblings of 'Tay coming on doesn't surprise me, we don't need points from that other guard position, we already know Frank will sacrifice scoring for players who are doing what he wants them to do.

All we need the other guard to do is not turn the ball over and defend the other team's best guard. I don't think we can ask Pullen to run the point, score points and guard the other team's best guy if we want to him to stay healthy all season.
