Many airports constructed just 50 years ago may not be sufficient to handle the demands of 21st century aircraft. This special unpacks the particular problems of the world's most extreme airports and examines the engineering behind them, from centuries-old territorial battles that have led to unsafe layouts, to geographical challenges like wind currents and natural obstacles that make these places unfit for travel.

On now, what a great show.

St. Marteen situation has been understood by aviation buffs for years.

Anybody know if they're going to ever build a new main terminal at MCI/KCI??    I picture an Orlando type lay out myself.   MCI/KCI get hammered hard by "up in the air" types these days.

why would up in the air types not like MCI?  i would think they'd love it as much as us passengers do.  easy in, easy out.
the city is the one suffering -their design has left so much open space/empty termis that they can't lease out.  pilots should love the design.

mhk most extreme: 8 minute drive to the airport.  1 minute walk from drop off to ticketing counter with ne'er a line.  or 2 minute walk from free parking to same ticketing counter

gateway to the world

While it doesn't happen much given that it's not a hub, people who have the rare layover hate the place . . . yeah easy in, easy out, but if you're there for awhile the place sucks.

Well like you said, its not a hub so...

Also there's been rumblings of new airport talk in KC but the way this city moves, and as broke as it is, and in this economic climate, I wouldn't expect anything for 20-30 years (at least).  I wouldn't be surprised to see analysis that would show a positive return on a new build, given how they're sitting on so much dead space with today's set up/ right now.

i'd be in favor of charging for parking at mhk, just to give us a "big-time" airport atmosphere.

you don't see sfo letting people park for free.  :dunno:

I think it's still got the Miami international terminal beat. Had a three-hour layover there last summer and it sucked balls for a major international terminal.

a friend/relative and his wife just got back from st maarteeeen. they've been a handful of times. he was showing me video of airplanes landing and taking off on his iphone just the other day. pretty crazy stuff. people just hang out and drink and watch the airplanes come and go and hold on to the fence and get blown into the water. there's a small bar right there where you can get dollar beers and a hotel just right there that's really nice i guess.
