Topeka, in some sort of native american language, means "a good place to plant potatoes"

Topeka once had a Continental Basketball Association team named the "Topeka Sizzlers".

I am from Topeka.  Didn't grow up there, but was born there.  Thankfully, I had the common sense (as a toddler) to GTFO of there.

Topeka was home to the 3rd ever "Hypermart", which are now commonly referred to as Wal-Mart Super stores, which combine grocery and general merchandise under one store.

In fact, many Topekans still call the Wal-Mart on Wanamaker a Hypermart.  That is one of the best ways of telling whether you are talking to a true Topekan or not.

June 8th, 1966, Topeka was ravaged by a tornado that would have been an F5, had the fujita scale been invented then.  Manhattan was also hit by a Tornado that day, but produced much less damage.

Dude, that mall was a gigantic upgrade from the old one.  Raintree, maybe?  White Rain?  Can't remember but that mall sucked, hard.

Topeka is home to Go Fourth! perhaps the finest fireworks display in the state of Kansas (or any where else).  One year it ended just scant moments after it began as a large shell exploded while still on the ground, and the operators deemed it unsafe to continue.  On another occasion a rapidly approaching thunderstorm caused enough concern that roughly 15 minutes of fireworks were exploded in about 30 seconds. <- amazing spectacle

White Lakes.

They are going to tear White Lakes down eventually and try to build something there.  May not be the best of ideas.

At one time there was a great strip club on the city's west side called Caberet USA.  I may or may not have picked up a stripper and put her over my shoulder and began carrying her out one fourth of July around 2pm after drinking approx 30 or so scotches.

Damn, I knew that.  My grandparents are in a retirement community somewhere around there.   Always get lost trying to find it though.

Snowball fights are illegal in Topeka.

"Fines for violating the law can be up to $499 and jailed for 179 days, which also prohibits stones and "other missiles."
