I could really #commonground with RFKj if he would prioritize subsidizing healthy foods so that the healthy stuff was the cheap food instead of the other way around. And while he is a nut job I think he does understand what constitutes healthy food

The SNAP stuff seems a little burdensome to apply in practice, which is probably one of the biggest reasons they haven't done it before. Otherwise, it seems pretty fair for the government to take the position that a supplemental nutrition program should exclude food with almost no nutritional value.

Personally I still tend to think that abolishing all this stuff in favor of a UBI could be the better move.

I'm always on the fence regarding soda/treats for SNAP. I totally get and agree that it should be used mostly for nutritional foods, but I also think it sucks that poor kids can't get a treat every once in a while. Everyone deserves a treat every once in a while you know. Also, I can't help but think that the current admin favors hurting/making people suffer more than "making people healthy again".

Underprivileged people should absolutely be able to get treats now and then. I think that’s a completely separate issue than what should be included under the SNAP program.

Yeah, I am more on favor of this. Telling people what they can or can't do is too much crap. It's like how you can't buy hot food with it. Get them a chunk of money and laisse faire that.

Is SNAP just for foodstuffs?

Wouldn’t the food bought using SNAP allow for more of a family’s regular money to be used for junk food, candy, etc?

A qualifying family of four can get as much as $975 a month in SNAP benefits. I dunno if it is a sliding scale. Prob is.

I bet lobbyists for the big food companies are probably involved, and they would prob be pretty pissed if people couldn’t buy their crap on SNAP.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

I agree. We already have so many ways of making it a crime (or at least a punishable offense) to be poor, I don’t think we need to come up with new and innovative ways to punish poor people.

Saw a really good tweet - something to the effect of “every iron dome missile Israel is firing costs a million dollars and the United States paid for every single one of them, I really don’t care if some poor single mother of 4 buys name brand Cheetos”

Is this the thread where we talk about how scarcity is a myth, or at least manufactured at this point?

I really do think we (like the people of earth) are capable of basically everyone having plenty at this point.

Some vendors at our local farmer's market are set up to take SNAP payments which seems like a good thing.
Agree that it doesn't make sense to subsidize the consumption of low nutrition foods.
Also agree that some people just get off on feeling like they are doing something to make poor people being bad/lazy.
From a fiscal standpoint, all of the cokes and twinkies purchased in the history of food stamps probably equals a few days of US defense spending.

Why would anyone want to drink raw milk? The milk you get at the grocery store or Braums is so pure and delicious.

Yeah, we are throwing money at ball rooms, iron dome missiles, MOABs, etc. And then blame the poor for wanting to eat.

JFC. I know these old fucks don’t care past their lifetimes, but they are setting the US back further and further every freaking day.

I also love the, “we should focus on something better”. “Yeah, I have no rough ridin' idea what that means but for now we are done with the thing that works.”
