2025 Big 12
« on: December 27, 2024, 03:10:56 PM »
Who do you like, other than the Rate champion Cats? ASU, Baylor, Clones (lol), Tech with the Nol 1 portal class seem to be worthy foes. Colorado with have talent, and BYU must have something. Really looks to be a multiple CFP team conference.

It will be identical to this year, no one will dominate and schedule favorability will be key.  Probably at least 6 teams who could realistically win it.

We should be in Arlington in both 2025 and 2026.

It will be the same but better, or at least the top tier. Middling teams like Houston, WVU and Cincyy will also improve. LU, Utah lol

Going to require collective improvement (play calling and execution) to take the step we want to see next year. IMO play calling was a factor but far from being  the sole reason we finished 8th this year.

CK has had 5 seasons with 8 or more wins, and the last two were 9-win seasons. I'm not complaining.

crap like this is why fans have meltdowns. We aren't good enough to expect that, lol. @wetwillie has it right but it's a boring answer but it's the social media age so everyone has to have a hot take to stand out.

Colorado should be much much worse. They are losing two top 10 picks and that offensive line will continue to be a disaster. Salter, their QB replacement is okay.
I'll hold off on ASU until we see what Skattebo does, I'd be shocked if he stays.
Flood Aggie should be good, but the last time they had a great season and returned most of the team, they puked on their shoes.
Baylor and TCU should be okay
BYU should be good
Utah, Arizona and OSU will suck again.
Tech clearly has made a good portal haul, but they've proven that doesn't mean crap
WVU, Cincy, UCF, Houston, KU will all be mid, but good enough to beat any of the good teams.

Also all of this is wait and see until the spring portal is closed and the players are placed. The spring portal will have more movement than it ever has, because of the teams needing to comply to the 105 roster limit. There is going to be a ton of carnage and a lot of players available in the spring.

I don’t see how not making it to Arlington in 2025, and again in 2026 — barring Avery Johnson getting injured or going pro or something — wouldn’t be considered a disappointment.

You can be disappointed if you want but it's really going to be difficult with 16 teams and unbalanced schedules and the annual roster turnovers you see with the portal to make that kind of prediction for anyone in the league any time soon.

Why are you acting like we have that much more talent and depth than everyone else in this conference? I very obviously love Avery and I'd take him before I'd take anyone else, but both of the quarterbacks and possibly both starting running backs from this year's conference championship game are returning. In these days of mega conferences teams could very easily go 10-2 and not make their conference championship game. You think we should expect to go 11-1 or 12-0 the next two seasons? Ohio State didn't even make their conference championship game.

Man, are you guys gE'ing? If not, I think some people are getting really swayed by a win against an average Rutgers team. We were damn lucky to get to 9 wins. Did you guys not see the same secondary, front four pass rush, or special teams that I did? We have a LOT of work to do.

How about that we have to replace most of our offensive line, WRs, secondary, kicker and both DE next season?

People just assuming we would have won had we played any of the other three B12 teams ranked ahead of us (Baylor, TCU, Tech). And forgot we got our asses kicked by three we did play (ASU, BYU, ISU). Our only good win came against Colorado with Travis Hunter leaving midway through the second quarter. It still took a last minute 50 yard bomb, and a lucky no-call on an obvious PI on a 4th and 5 (with two holds against WRs). https://youtu.be/RCMyBMYwO1Y?si=RJ0mAdiEN6PN9o2U&t=1013.

5 of our 6 conference wins (counting Arizona), came against the teams ranked 9-16.

Squandering Avery and Dylan would definitely be a shame. But our defense is currently slow and unathletic as hell. Our portal ranking is currently one of the worst in the big 12. This whole thing is very disappointing.

To be fair, I don't think nic is being swayed by the Rutgers game, he's been pretty consistent about this, I jus think he's wrong and overvaluing what we have. That being said, I do think you have swung too far to the other side. You can't say that ASU and ISU kicked our asses but we got lucky against Colorado, that doesn't make sense at all. Colorado had the lead for an entire 7 minutes, and they were already down when Hunter went out. We never stopped them from passing the ball, and they never stopped us from running it, not sure how much Hunter would have made a difference in that game. The ASU game was essentially the inverse of the Colorado game, but we didn't take the lead when we were driving late with the opportunity, like Colorado did. The Iowa State game was within one score, either way, the entire 60 minutes of the game. You make it seem as if we didn't belong on the field with those top 4 teams, and I couldn't disagree with that more. I think we absolutely can make and win the Big 12 Championship, but I have no idea how anyone can reasonably expect that.

Disappointing =/= burn it down.

If we go 9-3 or something next season, or the following season with an experienced generational QB, I’m sorry, but that is a disappointment. Something will have been left on the table. If we go 10-2 and get left out of the title game and playoffs? Same deal. If we go 10-2, miss the B12 title game, but are deemed good enough to make the playoffs, that lessens the disappointment quite a bit. I wouldn’t call that an overall disappointment, but missing a shot at the title would be disappointing in and of itself.

Fair enough about Colorado not leading until the end. I just never felt like we were ever the better team in the other 3 games.

Sorry for not communicating clearly. I also agree we could make the title game, and that it’s well within reach. I just disagree that we should expect nothing less the next two years. We have much work to do.

Our secondary was bad, we have no pass rush, and our offensive line will be new. It would be nice if our QB could be more accurate as well. That is a lot to get right. But I also think the Big 12 is wide open, and I trust our coaching and development.

We're in a great spot in terms of competing for the CCG and I'm pretty psyched about it. I'd love to say that the defense can only get better, but I'm afraid that they'd prove me wrong.
