how did the Harris campaign not let Walz "do his thing"?

one example I saw thrown around was he had been pretty vocal in his opposition to the electoral college before joining the campaign. I think in general he has been asked to tone down his progressive rhetoric but I don't know for sure. But this definitely isn't the first time I've seen this sentiment.
I don’t understand why anyone favors the electoral college, tbh.
