In the case at hand, the question on the firearm sales form was "Are an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?" 

Whew! I bought an 870 Wingmaster from Cabellas a couple years ago and vaguely recall answering that, but luckily I was not in active addition to alcohol.  All my other guns are inherited. 

Hunter is pretty mumped tho, because by all accounts he was addicted to crack when he answered the question falsely.

I really dislike the question because people in recovery are still addicted. It should read "have you taken cocaine, meth, (insert other drugs stronger than marijuana), or had more than 4 alcoholic beverages within a 24 hour period at any time over the past 12 months?"

I agree, or word it to be in "active addition."  There's a REALLY big difference in behavior between someone who is currently in active addition to crack and someone who is in recovery for an extended period of time from crack.

He knew they had his text messages talking about his crack usage. He's the definition of caught in 4K. I just don't see the upside for him for having this trial.

Our justice system heavily favors the defendant, especially so if you are even remotely famous. It's always going to be in your best interest to plead not guilty without some sort of plea bargain on the table.
