My wife locks them, I never remember/doesn't bother me.
This is pretty much my house currently, though we are all pretty casual about locking our house. I don't drive highly valuable cars, but family suv is always locked in the garage. For my cars I typically only lock it when in area where thieves are more likely to lurk (mall parking lots, downtowns, etc). Also lock if have someone else's valuable property inside or leaving wallet/cash inside.
I grew up, as prob many of us did in a high-trust culture in small-town No. Central Kansas. Hardly anyone I know locked up much of anything. Churches weren't locked, etc.
Everyone feeling like they have to lock everything up and protect their valuables is one of many symptoms of a low-trust society.
We all know time and place, but it's not like there is a threat lurking around every corner.
