'Clams - you ever get your bolt issue resolved?
« on: June 15, 2010, 09:30:11 AM »
Gotta replace my front brakes tonight and I have a feeling I'm going to have to drill out the screws holding the rotors on.  Need some good Karma.

:driving: <----- maybe not me tonight

Why do you think you are going to have to drill them out?  They shouldn't be on there all that tight, I think mine were rated at 25lbs of torque- not all that much.  They should come out and go back in really easy, just make sure you're using a ratchet and not some shitty set of pliers that will strip them.

What happened with mine was that the guy at Advanced sold me the wrong pads and I didn't know it so my caliper wasn't fitting correctly over the new pads after i put the new pads on - the calipers wouldn't go back in line with the caliper mount.  I went to tighten the caliper mounting bolts and they wouldn't move so I thought there was something wrong, I put some of my strength behind it (i have a ton) and it snapped one of the bolts in half.

I tried for a while but couldn't get that bolt out of the pin (see below)
The bolt on the right broke off in the pin on the left.  I didn't think the pin would come out of the caliper mount so I thought i was fracked but it pops right out so I just went down to O Reilly and bought a new pin and bolt for $4.

Just my luck with anything that gets wet.  I have an older home, so every plumbing project has been a test of wills with corroded bolts.  You're probably right, but I feel cursed when it comes to water and metal.

I think it's pretty rare that something happens like my scenario.  Automotive grade bolts shouldn't corrode like the ones in your house, I think they're rated at grade 8 and above which made it weird that I snapped one.  But they should just loosen right up.

Here's a link to a step by step if you need something to reference when you get in there-

Assuming you're just doing fronts, I don't screw around with the rear.

Thanks for the link.  I've helped my bro change out his brakes, and I've done it on my Accord before, but this time I'm replacing the rotors since they are OE and its above 125,000.

Most were good by hand, 1 caliper bolt was so stuck I broke the ratchet head trying to turn in.  Going to borrow my neighbors impact wrench to finish tonight.
